Fortytwo - Solid
Release: 2005Label: Godt Selskap Records
By the first time I had listened to this album a few times, I was already bored. I'll say it right now, the last songs were really boring. Not because the riffs are boring or anything, but because this album never changes. It doesn't evolve. It just kinda stays there. I can play the first song and the last song again, and I probably won't tell which is which. It seems that Fortytwo have made this album in a rush or something, and they didn't have time to perfect the riffs and make them stand out. So the result is an average death/melodic-death album. The thing that really pisses me off on this release are the drums. Sometimes they're ok, but most of the times they show no originality at all, and the most annoying of all drum beats is the one featured in the intro of \"Generation Obsolete\". It also seems like the vocalist was tired near the last songs. Like it or not, those are metalcore vocals, sadly. The parts which show a rather melodic side to Fortytwo are good, but only if you've never heard In Flames or the other millions of Gothenburg bands copying them. Making cliched melodies and harmonizing them is old, if not very boring.
But don't start thinking \"Solid\" is an horrible release. Something I admire is that they can keep a heavy touch at almost all times, and when there's a solo it's always good (even if the album only has a few solos). The riffs ARE varied, but they just need to spread their riffs in many songs, instead of putting all the good ones in a few songs. It also doesn't include any boring interlude, which is also something other metal bands fail to accomplish. Overall, not a bad album, but spreading their riffs into more than a few songs and spending more time on a song by adding more original riff would help the band greatly.
