Trelldom hasn't put out and album since 1998, and I actually thought the band had ceased to exist, though it seems Gaahl wants it otherwise, because he and Trelldom is ready with their third full length album "Til Minne…".
When pressing play, it's like being put 15 years back in time, melancholic black metal, raw and in your face, a cold and ripping guitar, noisy drums all over the place, a lighter sloppy, yet powerful bass and the eerie, wicked, cold and insane screams from Gaahl, sounding like they come from beyond the grave. The sound is also as minimal and atmospheric as the early black metal releases, no wonder as Trelldom has recorded the album in Grieghallen with Pytten as the producer, who was the mastermind behind most of the classic black metal albums from Norway. He has hit the right cold and raw sound again, with some tweaks to a more organic and full sound at times, a great play and a very fitting production.
In the end of the album, we get the track 'Steg' which is a really wicked and evil track, almost an incantation, slow and ambient, with a great colder than cold guitar riff, a distorted bass and frantic drumming, going in loops, with Gaahl chanting on top of the music. An astonishing track displaying the true evil of black metal, and one of those tracks that will scare a lot of people off, a really well-written track. The eerie and quite scary outro with cold violins is also awesome and well made.
There are far in between really good black metal albums these days, and yet farther in between album catching the atmosphere and intensity of the early days, "Til Minne…" does all that and delivers a slap of cruelty into our minds. Some of the music might have been written as far back as 1992 when Gaahl formed the band, though even old material needs dedicated musicians and artists, to turn out as complete and evil as this.
