I guess I was one of the few that weren't carried away by VolBeat's first album "The Strength/The Sound/The Songs" so I didn't expect much of the band future material back then. Time went and I guess my first encounter with the new VolBeat material was through the radio, when they played the first single of the album 'The Garden's Tale', a beautiful and haunting song, featuring Johan Olsen from Magtens Korridorer, singing the Danish part of the song, as a great contrast to Michael Poulsen's English lines. I was quite surprised after having heard the song in the radio and even more surprised when I got home from work that night and found the album in my postbox.
After the first spin, the album and it's atmosphere had me caught and I was yet a victim in the web of VolBeat, though I had to cast that off me and get to listen to decently to the album. A great album consisting of energetic rock n' metal, metallic and heavy riffs paired with rock n' rollish rhythm patterns, spiced up with metal paces and smshing doublebass drumming and Michael's crooner sounding voice, he could have done well in the 50ties and 60ties as well as now. There is an old dusty scent over the music as well, the way it is composed on that is, I guess they use the old times a lot as inspiration, spicing it up with nowadays instrumental skills, technique and modern production.
This isn't an album that have to be bought and enjoyed due to the musical performance, not that it is bad, not at all, all instruments are being handled really well, and the production is making them all sound great, powerful and full of energy, though what drives this album is the songs, the craft of song writing has been taken very serious and that has resulted in 11 really great and catchy songs, that won't grow boring, and on top of that the great vocal performance of course.
Volbeat is good on record, but even better live, the intensity and energy from their live performance have been transferred onto "Rock The Rebel/Metal The Devil" really well, and that together with the great songs have made a good and lasting album, now go have a listen!
