Tor Marrock-The Death Of Summer...

Tor Marrock hails from Wales and delivers a strange blend of gothic rock and heavier and darker doom/death elements, a blend they themselves refer to as "Dark gothic death concept metal", a cryptic yet quite fitting description. As far as I can understand the material on this release is what the band so far has made, as they have sparked some interest here and there and wants to show us what they have got now!

Composition-wise the band shifts a lot between doom/death sounding elements, though not always as heavy and sinister as the merchants of the genre do, a bit more light and with a certain rock attitude all the way through. Though there is some heavy chugging here and there and the some sinister moods are reached. The vocals ranges from a tortured kind of clean singing to a darker almost growl, though all types of vocals posses emotions and passion and the tortured edge does also follow the vocals through out the 10 tracks.

Musically does Tor Marrock not offer that much out of the ordinary, the rhythm section seems quite tight and gives us the needed rhythm patterns and shifts and not much more. The guitars are loud and heavy, and offer decent play, the best part being the melodies and melodic leads. The most interesting about Tor Marrock are the guitars and vocals though.

When twisting and turning the final impression of the music, after having given "The Death Of Summer..." a good deal of spins, strange is the buzzword standing out the most. The band has some good ideas, though it is like some of it drowns along the way. For starters a better and more detailed sound will do the band good and some more varied song writing as well, as the songs start to mud together quite fast and it's hard to single them out when listening. If all songs were as strong as the really good title track the band would get a long way fast, though as this is their first release and as the band was formed in 2004, there are time and if the band keep on working on their ideas and get their concept totally clear, we'll hear a lot more to Tor Marrock some day.
