The concert that heralded to the world that the mighty Dissection had returned was played in Stockholm on the date October 30th 2004. The show was taped for a later release, more exactly when the band had released their last offering "Reinkaos" and was ready to put the band to rest, due to them having delivered the ultimate of what they could be able of.
The gig they delivered back in 2004 should be the best gig they've done, I haven't had the luck to catch the band live, though of what was said back then and now, the whole of Dissection and especially frontman Jon Nödtveidt was on fire. No wonder as the concert was less than one and a half months after he was released from prison.
The legion of Nödtveidt, Set Teitan, Brice Leclerq and Tomas Asklund enters the stage to the tones of 'At The Fathomless Depths' and the crowd and band goes into a frenzy as the first notes of 'Night's Blood' leaves the guitars, that frenzy continues throughout the whole concert. Both the band and the audience are ignited and delivers more than expected. We get all the classics, it is actually hard to mention a track that is missing or what have had a better effect than the ones chosen. We also get the premiere of 'Maha Kali', which sounds really good on this night.
In the start of the show, the guitar sound seems a bit off, but it becomes good during the second song 'Frozen' and then the whole production is up to par, the sound is heavy and clear, while it still possesses a great deal of the live atmosphere. Especially the guitars sound great, they have a lot of bottom and during the leads and solos, all details stand out clear, and if you want an evidence of heavy guitars, fast forward to the excellent delivery of Tormentor's 'Elizabeth Bathory', it has never sounded better and Jon's voice fits it perfectly. If I have to complain about something about the sound, the drums might sound a bit too artificial at times, but it is nothing that ruins anything to be honest. The lightshow during the concert is also very balanced and well made and adds to the cold atmosphere Dissection invokes.
The bonus on the DVD is the video for 'Starless Aeon' which is decent without being that special. There is a slideshow with photos from the concert, many of those pictures are really good and taken on perfect times. And as the highlight a long interview with Jon Nödtveidt, where we get a good insight in what drives him and Dissection, informative and interesting.
"Rebirth Of Dissection" is quite a stellar DVD release, the concert is amazing and doesn't leave much to wish for, just like it should be with such a release as this. The clipping of the show is great as well, and the effects there are utilized once in a while, work really well too, and add something special to the atmosphere. The same effects are used in the DVD menus, again a nice touch that makes the release complete. Death metal-, black metal-, anti-cosmic death metal-, Dissection fan or not, this is a DVD to own!
