I have had this promo for I don't know how long, but it has been hiding in a pile of already reviewed CDs, until this very day, when I was looking for some album, and found this instead. When looking up additional info about the release and the cover artwork, I found out, to my big surprise, that the release of the EP had been delayed until the 1st of June this very year, if I just had known that, it would have been the perfect birthday present for myself!
Though let's get back to the music on this 7". I had my first encounter with this Finnish death metal squadron when I purchased their "Satanasphere" 7" which was released back in 2000, and I was immediately fascinated by their dark and haunting death metal. This day today, the band does still deliver death metal, not as dark as back in the start, though still as brutal and relentless, if not even more, I guess the title of the release says it all, there is no compromise in the music as well. The guitars are grinding their way through the songs, great riffs are getting hammered out, varied with some dark melodic riffs and leads. The drumming is blasting, with some good breaks and more mid-paced sections. The vocals from Sir Holm is one of the highlights, his sick and insane growl, often layered, sounds amazing and adds a rapid atmosphere to the music. The overall atmosphere is haunting and evil, there is a certain indescribable eerie and wicked atmosphere surrounding the music, Devilry do have something unique.
The production of the music is dark and quite noisy, the guitars have a good and raw sound, with a nice edge to them. The vocals come clear through the sound picture and haunt the listener. The drums tend to drown a bit once in a while, though the snare and the hi-hat are audible all the way through. When that is said the quite chaotic and messy sound, actually fits the music very well and adds to the overall eerie atmosphere.
I've been caught in the web of Devilry since the first day I laid ears upon the band, and the band hasn't become any weaker throughout the years, they keep on slaying and do what they do best, unmerciful death metal, rabid and aggressive, with an immense dark and haunting aura, enchanting the listener. People can think what they want concerning the title of the EP and the content of the lyrics, though if the music gets the chance to speak for itself, it’ll ravish many death and black metal fans, as Devilry do deliver something really unique and slaying.
