Josh Homme and Jesse Hughes are at it again, better known as Baby Duck and Boots Electric respectively while they jam in the Eagles Of Death Metal. And jam they do, as with their last effort, 2005's "Peace Love Death Metal" the brand new disc "Death By Sexy" continues on that path of fun rocking tunes that creep into your sub-consciousness and stay there provoking you to listen to the album again and again. Mixing lo-fi garage punk with blues rock, Homme and Hughes have created an intriguing album once again. The title alone sets the pace of what they want you to take from this album, they want all their fans to rock and dance the night away in the sexiest ways one can imagine.
The first thing you hear when you slap this disc into your player and push play is an almost evil cackle that then erupts into the first single from the album 'I Want You So Hard'. It's easy to see why this track was picked to have the honours of being released as a single because it charges forth with spontaneity and excitement catching the listener and forcing you to get lost in their good times. The production which is also provided by Homme is similar to the qualities he uses while producing the Queens Of The Stone Age albums, stripped down with a 70ties rock feeling that carries along with it warm overtones and the traditional buzz of that era's distortion. Hughes sings in a falsetto voice throughout most of the album, this may put some fans off but if one takes the time to listen you find that this approach is fitting as he voices forth his lyrics which are about satan, women, and how great he thinks the band is, which can be heard on 'Solid Gold'. The song that sank its hooks into me the most is 'Cherry Cola'. It has all the key ingredients that make it a memorable song: catchy guitar riffs, a chorus that sticks in your head, lyrics that draws you in, and an overall feeling of fun and good times.
We all know that Josh Homme has great guitar skills as we have seen in his work with Queens Of The Stone Age and Kyuss, but when he sits behind the drumkit he also is very talented and plays with an upbeat punky furiosity that carries the songs forward. Hughes' fuzzy drenched in distortion riffs are also upbeat and catchy, the duo have grown tighter as a band which is shows in how the tracks on this disc are a little more diverse and developed than on the previous one. There may be a slight hint of Queens Of The Stone Age here and there albiet brief ones, but what it comes down to is that there is not any other band out there that sounds like the Eagles Of Death Metal. They continue to carve a niche that is all their own and pave it with their rocking brand of playful sleaze rock and debauchery. There are no pretensions to the Eagles Of Death Metal, what you see is what you get and when you have these frolicking tunes lined up in your sights there is nothing you can do but enjoy it.
