Once again the death metal mongers of Cannibal Corpse have delivered another slab of bubbling and bloody brutal death beneath our noses. The Cannibals' tenth album bears the simple yet effestive title of "Kill". The band have had many ups and downs throughout their long career, and as of late the band has not delivered anything that breaks new ground within the genre, "Kill" follows along these steps.

On this album guitarist Rob Barrett has returned after his 9 year absence which led me to believe I would be in for a treat of blistering riffs and leads like old times, but such isn't the case. There are good riffs and leads scattered through out the album but they do not offer the needed diversity and substance to make them memorable. The men in this band are no doubt strong and excellent musicians as they have proven time and again, but something just seems to be missing from these tracks. 'Submerged In Boiling Flesh' offers up some of the best riffs on the album, overall the guitar passages are technical but need that extra power to blast from your speakers. The album closer 'Infinite Misery' is the highlight of the album for me, it is a mid-paced instrumental that churns forth and erupts into a lead break filled with squealing notes and string bends. The drums fit this track well providing a galloping rhythm although they sound rather weak to my ears. The speed and aggression is there in Paul Mazurkiewicz's drumming, but he needs a better tone to be able give his playing that bone snapping heaviness. Corpsegrinder's vocals are pretty monotone throughout the album, he throws in a few diverse moments now and again but the power his vocals need just isn't there.

The brutality and speed that you expect from Cannibal Corpse is there, it just seems to fall on its face as it takes off. Songs seem to run together and the needed crunch is lacking, perhaps next time around they will offer up some songs that will give a swift kick to the face all the way through. Sadly we can say that this band has already had their day and seen their prime. "Kill" continues the path that the band laid down on "The Wretched Spawn" if that album caught you then this one may do the same as well but for those looking for a pulverizing cascade of bloody death metal it may be wise to look elsewhere.
