Until this album ended up in my postbox, all I knew about the Swedish squadron Serpent Obscene, was what I had read about them here and there. What I've read had always been pretty blend, a love or hate kinda band it seemed, though now I was ready to feel their impact on my own body.
The band delivers violent death/thrash, the music is most of the time unbelievable fast and brutal, though still pretty varied, even though the songs start to sound a bit like each other after 7 of the 10 tracks. There are many blistering and lightening fast guitar riffs and some good aggressive leads. The drumming is pretty impressive, fast and thundering, the kick drums are getting used a lot, displaying some good footwork, though the rest of the drumset isn't spared. There are killer breaks, amazing fills and a good use of the different cymbals. Another nice thing about the drumming, is the natural sounding kick drum, it might mud a bit when it's going fast, though that's how it should sound. And even if the play is fast as fuck, the drumming is pretty varied and shows the drummer's skills. The vocal is a spiteful thrashy scream, blended with a bit of growling here and there, a good and effective vocal, piercing bone and marrow, spitting forth its messages.
As written in the start, some of the tracks, have a tendency of sounding the same, as the band is going forward with a lot of speed most of the time, though the band delivers their music with such an intensity and energy, that the 34 minutes the album lasts, flies away really fast, and when done, all you have left is a sore neck. This is highly enjoyable no-nonsense metal, a good blend of old Kreator and old Morbid Angel, to make it simple, but still a lot more. The music is great on disc, but damn, I think it would be a blast to catch these guys live, due to the intensity, the energy and the brutality they are showing on "Chaos Reign Supreme"! And to end of with a conclusion to the love or hate band thing, I started the review with, it can be said pretty simple: "If you like your metal brutal, fast and quite technical, then you'll love Serpent Obscene, and if you don't like your metal like that, you must be quite a wimp!"
