Cronian, the long awaited collaboration between Øystein G. Brun and Vintersorg, which initially was known as Ion, has now been mounted into their first official release, the debut album "Terra". Musically the album is a journey through different musical soundscapes melted together to a whole, pushing emotions and inner feelings, while creating images en masse in the head of the listener.

Musically it's easy to draw parallels to Borknagar and Vintersorg and so forth, though that would be a too easy way of getting this review done, as the music offers much more, than just being a blend of those 2 bands. The mainbase is in progressive music added a lot of atmosphere, into this are weaved elements of black metal, technical pieces, rock parts and so forth. There are many shifts in moods, paces and levels of energy. The whole trip through the album is a rollercoaster ride of atmospheres and ever changing musical inputs. The music often shifts from being quite catchy and mellow, to being extreme, dark and even brutal at times, to being overly technical and progressive, to ambient and weird. Though even we are being offered a lot of shifts from one style to another and many pace shifts, the music more or less always flows perfectly, though who was in doubt of the great song writing talent of the 2 men in the band? Vocally Mr. V, as Vintersorg is calling himself in this project, is doing a really good job, we get all from his clean varieties to his grim and harsh black metal rasp, an a lot in between as well, an emotional and passionate vocal effort from him, showing most of the many sides he has.

"Terra" is a grower and needs a good amount of spins, before the music starts to do its work properly, and by that I mean, it takes a while for one to pick up on the emotions and atmospheres presented by the band, so the images and thoughts can start to flow inside the head of the listener, and make the journey known as Cronian complete. The music and vocals do touch a lot of places and emotions, and I think many can find themselves somewhere along the road of "Terra". Though many might find the album too Borknagar and Vintersorg alike, and no one can really be blamed for that, as the association is easy to do, both due to the members and some of the music, though Cronian does have a life of its own, there is no doubt about that, dig deep and find what you are looking for, even though this isn't music for all.

Rating: 7½/10
