We have now reached the 4th full length album from the French death metal maniacs in Yyrkoon. This also marks their debut album on Osmose Productions and with that label in the back and the upcoming European tour with Nile, I'm sure they'll get the attention they deserve.
We are being offered blazing death metal, with a good dose of melody in it, without it ever gets too soft though. The main-base of the tracks is fast forward death metal, heavy and noisy guitar riffs, varied well with some killer leads and a lot of good guitar solos. The solos are actually a quite funny thing, as they often are delivered in the classical heavy metal way, though it fits well. There is a killer solo in the track 'The Book' and one even better in 'Horror From The Sea', the latter is also delivered by Andy LaRoque, which more or less always guarantee for quality. Another great thing about the band, is the amazing bass player Victorien Vilchez, he is delivering the most amazing basslines throughout the album, and it is audible all the way through, at the same level or a bit above the rhythm guitar. I guess even producer Jacob Hansen has been impressed by the bassist, as he often tend to hide the bass a bit too much. The production is by the way good and very fitting, dark and heavy, with the focus directed at the right places. The sound is a bit complex and dark, though that brings atmosphere to the music. The vocals is another fitting feature on the album, a dark and tortured growl, leading us through the tracks and keeping our attention notched at the madness going on.
The album has its inspiration in the Cthulu myth created by H.P. Lovecraft and the release catches the dark, eerie and mysterious atmosphere from his work pretty well. This album is a feast for all fans of dark and brutal death metal, there can't be much doubt about that. I've enjoyed reviewing the bastard much myself, Yyrkoon doesn't as such bring a fresh breath to the scene, they just deliver tight and hard-hitting as hell death metal, with some great guitar solos included, this is a solid and asskicking release you should check out and the bass on the album, fuck it's superb!
