This Italian band might be on their way to something big, this is their second demo, and my first acquaintance with them, but a pretty good encounter. The band delivers progressive metal/rock with a good dose of gothic rock splashed in it, and displays a good sense for well-balanced song writing and a good ability to transform their ideas into listenable music.
The band is building their music pretty much as expected within this genre, good basic riffs, pretty calm, though very catchy and heavy, on top of that they have weaved melodic guitar leads which takes the music to a new level. Beneath the wall of guitars the bass is keeping the rhythm tight together with the drums, when it all isn't turned into a spin of breaks and technical delicacies. Though the band seldom looses itself to going to technical, they are focusing on the song as the main thing here, and that is nice to hear for once, from a new band within this scene, especially when the band write music as well as Lykaion does.
The vocals are pretty well performed as the music. And when first the vocals have soaked in, they are a good fit to the at times dreamy music, though the singer singing on here, is no longer in the band. The production of the demo is okay, the instruments are supported very well and the details are coming through well enough, it seems like some of the lead guitar drowns once in a while, though that might be on purpose, I haven't figured that entirely out yet.
This is a good demo and band to check out if you're into the more calm side of progressive metal with a dark and thick gothic rock atmosphere, Lykaion delivers some good tunes with a great focus on the good flowing song, and they have succeeded in that. On top of that we get a bit of technical extravaganza here and there, without it ever gets too much though. Drop by their website and check their music out, you can hear the whole of this demo there.
