It is not very often that I get that surprised when I throw an album in the player, as I often know what to expect of an album or a band. Even though I don't know the band, album or label that well, I still have some kind of expectations, which sometimes are totally off what I get. As it was with this release from the Swiss band MXD. What emerged from my speakers was techno-dance infested rock with a metallish edge, with the main focus on the electronic elements and the groovy beats. I can't see many ordinary metal fans get into this band or album, though with the popularity of Rammstein and the likes, which in many cases are more straight out rock than this, this subgenre might emerge as something big, fusing together dance beats and distorted guitars and frustrated hardcore/industrial like screams into something widely acceptable.
There isn't a boring moment within the 12 tracks on the album, MXD does always have a lot of things going on at once, a lot of effects, a lot of pace shifts, different elements are getting weaved in and out of each other all the time, and once in a while it can be hard to keep focused on the main-theme of the songs, though often is one brought back to reality, when it all seems too lost. There are songs on here which are more danceable than others, once in a while the band even becomes very sinister and deliver something close to being industrial, like the dark 'Urban Desert' and I guess the track before it 'Ictus' can be considered in that vein as well. Slow droning ambient with frustrated yet pretty calm vocals, dark, bleak and sinister atmospheres moving slowly along the clock.
For people into the more electronic and ambient side of metal, there might be something to get on this album. Fans of lighter industrial might also get a kick out of some of the tunes on "Frustration Is Fuel", while metal fans might be repulsed by what they encounter when starting this album. The music on the album is a strange blend and is once in a while hard to find head and tail on, though it is executed well and the members of the band know how to build atmospheric and captivating sound-scapes. I'll not grade this release, as it won't fit into the scheme going on here, though drop by the band's website and give the music on there a listen, this might be something up your alley!
