I got hooked on this band's metal with their latest album "Truth Beyond…" a killer blend of extreme technical and grinding death metal and good melodic work. This new album didn't need many seconds of listening, before it stood clear that Neuraxis has taken the brutality a step further and has turned down the melodic influences. Not that we aren't served melody at all, there are still many good and complex melodies present in the music, as a nice contrast to the much used blastbeat infested heavy grinding death metal.
It seems like the band has developed their song-writing skills, as the music flows really well, throughout the album, considering the heavy technical approach the band has. We are served heaps of different riffs, pace-shifts, melodic leads and ripping blasts. The band blasts a lot throughout the album, and does sound good and hooks the listener hard. When one first has entered the universe of Neuraxis, it is hard to let go, as one is entangled in the brutality and soothing melodies. As for the guitars, the work is stellar, there is always going something wicked on, either a riff progression, a melodic lead or some crazy breaks. The drumming is insane as well, all from percussion style drumming to faster than fuck blastbeats, and again does the pace-shifts and wicked breaks stand out, together with the skilled fills. The bass is rumbling even though it much of the time is struggling to make itself heard, in the complex production. The sound is good and pretty clear, even though it muds in the low-end, when it gets too fast or too many things are happening at the same time. The guitars are crystal clear all the time, as they are the main-instruments in the game Neuraxis delivers, and that's fair enough, considering the quality of the guitars. The main vocal is a great, guttural and evil growl, good on its own, but even better on the tracks, where the band have back-up growls from people as Jason Netherton, Alex Erian, Pat Loisel and Guillaume Audet. Though Ian Campell's own variation to his growl, the wicked scream is great as well. Good performances all over.
This is yet a strong Neuraxis album, and so far the best in my ears, the band keeps on developing, and as the prior albums, always to the more brutal side, without loosing the melodic edge. This album is fast and brutal as fuck, but still quite melodic. A great album that will last for long and supply many hours of enjoyment, if brutality is your game.
