This Russian band has quite a history behind them and 4 full length releases. I don't think I've heard more than a track or 2 with the band throughout the time, and got very surprised when I heard this MCD, as I remembered the band as a pretty brutal death metal band, and that was not what was delivered on "Try". The music delivered on "Try" is a modern mishmash of brutal and crushing technical metal, the 3 tracks on here takes a little while to get used to.
The guitars are tuned down and are dark, the riffs are delivered slowly and crushing, spiced up with twisted leads, which weaves in and out of the basic riffs. The bass is heavy and rumbling, delivering its carnage below the dark guitars, controlling the rhythm and pushing the music forward. The drumming is quite break-beat oriented, short double kick pumps, a fierce snare drum and crashing cymbals. The pace is often mid-paced, with a few pace shifts, into something faster. The vocals are screamed, a tortured growl from the bowels of despair and frustration. It works well with the music, though it needs a couple of spins to settle in.
The band tries to hit it off with a modern blend of thrashy metal, with some death metal elements mixed, some technical moments and grooves en masse. The compositions are as such good and the music works and makes an impact on the listener. It takes a couple of spins to get there, due to the vocals and the very dark sound, and the eerie wicked guitar sound at times. The production is complex and dark, and holds the music a bit back, a bit lighter and more organic sound would have suited some of the parts better, though the cold, industrial-like feel is pushed very well, with the production.
This output wasn't the one I expected from Grenouer, though it has turned out to be pretty good and awarding. It is not the most original music, even though the band is hitting in a unique direction with this, but there are still traces left of other modern band's efforts. But a really good start on this new adventure. An exciting output from the Russians and it will be great to see how they continue this style, it can become really good! The 3 tracks on this MCD are worth the while and bring both darkness and an eerie atmosphere into the living room!
