Even though the gothic rock scene isn't as crowded and talked about nowadays compared to 5 years ago, a new band still pops up now and then and hopes to ignite a spark or 2. One of the new bands is The Farewell Fields, hailing from Greece and consisting of Chris B, which is the man behind the music and male vocals and the female singer Niki L. Those 2 make up this duo, which delivers bleak atmospheres and easy-listening gothic-rock on this, their first demo recording.

There are 3 tracks on the demo, and one of those being a cover version of Morrissey's 'Every Day Is Like Sunday', this version is by the way pretty good and Niki's vocals works perfectly on it, and the processed back up vocals from Chris gives it a good atmosphere. The vocals from Niki are the highlight of the demo, no doubt about that. The recording of her vocals isn't the best though, so it is presented a bit rough, though she can sing, so one can only imagine her vocals being recorded properly. Musically the music is a bit simple, but quite effective, the songs are quiet and moves slowly forward in a very pleasant pace, driven by the vocals. The compositions are as such okay, nothing breath-taking, and some of the added synth gets a bit annoying in the long run, if I have to be honest. The vocals of Chris isn't the best either, they serves well as backup for the female lead vocals, though is a bit too rough and lacks a melodic and soft edge, to make this work perfectly, but with some training or a vocal effect or 2, it could be made good.

Considering this is the band's first release, the material is good and very listenable and very laid back and unimpressed. The arrangements are clever and catch quickly on and the music seems very honest and flows well. Within some time The Farewell Field could evolve into something really good, the basics and talent are already present on this demo, this could become one of the new players on the gothic-rock scene.
