A new band has dawned in Norway, The Deviant which was spawned out of the ashes of 122-Stabwounds and features members of the before mentioned band, Forlorn and Gehenna. The style is blackened death metal and I am sure that the band will carve their name in the foreheads of those who lend their ears to the pummelling music.

The compositions posses a majestic almost epic feel most of the time, when not the music is straight forward and brutal, I can't help to think of newer Immortal material when I listen to this album. Cold melodic riffs, great bridges, thundering drum work and the raw rasp delivered from Dolgar, instead of the usual growl or the more epic voice he has. He does remind a bit of Abbath once in a while or more on this album. A pretty good move as I'm sure a lot of people miss Immortal, and we have yet to see a band to take over their throne, and with a bit of luck The Deviant will be that band. Though The Deviant has a lot more to offer, as they becomes pretty brutal and killing at times, which is a feature that works great with the cold majestic epicness of the melodic riffing. There are some good riffs here and there, even though they all aren't that original. The drumming is good most of the times and I am fascinated by the vocals from Dolgar, he is the monster he sounds like on this album.

The heavy and pretty well-balanced production is good and fitting, the sound does drown once in a while in the slightly muddy low-end, though that doesn't hurt the output that much, it actually brings some to the dark atmosphere. The music is raw and the raw and slightly chaotic edge the production has fits and brings it out.

A fierce and heavy blend of death metal and black metal atmosphere, is what we get on this bastard of a record. If The Deviant keeps up the intense and brutal level mixed with the atmosphere and technical approach at times, they'll soon slay in the world of metal. This first release from them is more than worthy to stand alone on this crowded scene, a good album that sticks to ones mind a long time after it has stopped playing, a good feature. A good team we have here in Blod, E.N. Death, Violator and Dolgar, they'll hopefully bring carnage to our world for a long period to come!
