Cold and dark Oslo, Norway is probably best known for its outpouring of evil black metal, though once in a while there is a change of pace and a band of a different genre rises out of the city, which is what we have here in the form of brutal death metal. Zeenon who take their name from a place in Greek mythology, was founded by vocalist Linn Pedersen and Nina Hansen in 1995 as a sort of cover band, but soon the desire to create their own material took over and death metal of the most vicious kind started to emerge from their minds. "Blood Vessel Criteria" is the band's first full length release after several powerful demos that have been received very well by their audience.
The album kicks off and smashes into you with the track 'Welcome To The Conic Section' it tears into you right from the opening notes and doesn't let go, Pedersen's guttural growl cuts through the pulverizing rhythms supplied by Elin Henden's bass and drummer Mads Guldbekkhei whose lightening fast arm and footwork reach almost inhumane speeds. Linda Aurland provides shredding guitars that slash through each track with intensity and there are a lot of great lead breaks and solos which I enjoy very much, for those who don't enjoy blistering guitar work, the frenzied lead guitar fills and solos may become too numerous and annoying in the long run though. The music is precise and pounding with hard hitting drums and a super heavy low-end, in which all instruments come together in an intense groove that at times can shake foundations. Linn Pedersen's vocals have the scathing deepness that this type of music requires, in which she mixes in venomous higher pitched vocals to good effect. The production could benefit from a thicker sound that would make everything seem all the more crushing.
"Blood Vessel Criteria" is a worthy addition to any death metal fans CD collection. The disc of 8 tracks may only last around 35 minutes, but during that time your ears are given a ferocious beating that will leave them wanting more. A great debut to kick off their hopefully long and exciting existence with.
