This is the second album from this American band, released on what must be the leading metalcore label Abacus Recordings. Though this is not the average generic ordinary slap of metalcore, Haste The Day actually ended up with surprising me quite a lot.

At first and at many other times throughout the album, one is left behind with the impression, that Haste The Day is your typical generic metalcore band, they have it all. A base in heavy and metallic hardcore, a lot of heavy breakdowns, a bit too many once in a while. Into that the band weaves well-crafted melodies, very listenable and catchy, and once in a while enchanting as well. The melodic work does more than once reminds me of what Björler did in At The Gates, though that's not necessarily a bad thing. The usual half-growled/screamed Swedish-like death metal vocal is also present, a pretty good, emotional and frustrated scream.

When that is in the clear, let's move onto what surprised me on this release. When it all is most brutal, hard-hitting and on the edge, the band goes pop. The music turns soft and very radio friendly, the thundering drums become eatable for "normal" people. The vocal becomes clean and soft. The choruses nice and really ear-catching, with good back-up choirs. A pretty good feature that helps this album last. It has probably been done before, though this is the first time I hear it to this extent, and as soft as it gets. When it goes soft, it's softer and as catchy as Green Day, when they go really soft. 'Long Way Down' could become an immense radio-hit if marketed proper.

A good album Haste The Day here has made, regardless of how commercial it at times get, due to it is those elements that makes the album distance itself from other metalcore releases, and makes it worth using time on and makes one remembering it. Those damn choruses stick to the mind, that's for sure. The hardcore/metal part of the game, could have been more interesting, but overall a pretty good and interesting album.

Rating: 7½/10
