The German thrash-maniacal force of Tankard is now ready with their first DVD, a beast consisting of 2 discs. A full show from May 2005 and the band's 4 video clips 'The Morning After', 'Space Beer', 'Minds On The Moon' and 'Tanze Samba Mit Mir', an interview and a photo gallery. And then a disc with outtakes from different festivals and gigs around the globe, sounds like some hours of great fun together with Gerre, Andy, Frank and Olaf.
The full concert from Frankfurt am Main shows the band at their best, there is so much energy present on stage and all 4 band members are on fire, lead by the always characteristic Gerre, that man is a bomb on stage and his interaction with the crowd is amazing. We are treated all the killer classic tracks to a couple of tracks from the newest album "Beast Of Bourbon". Though 'Alien' and 'Chemical Invasion', my 2 fave thrashers from the band, stands as the best tracks during the concert. Though the rest of the 24 tracks are also delivered convincing and hard-hitting. The band has been going for 23 years, but is as strong as ever, especially when standing on the stage. Just the concert and the energy displayed during it, makes the DVD worth the money.
The interview which is done with 2 members at the time, first Gerre and Frank and then Andy and Olaf, is good and fun, not that many questions and long answers, but some good stories are told and the boys show that they know how to have fun, and they act very natural, they need their beer when they need it, a good feature.
The outtakes on disc 2, takes us onstage and backstage, with the band in the car and in the hotels, a shocking experience for both us who is watching, but for sure also for the fans that Gerre takes on stage, dances with, kisses, sits on, and so forth. Tankard knows how to party and we get to see it, straight up, it reminds me of my drunken youth, and those guys are older than me, I have grown boring, damn. A good and action packed disc, with a high value of entertainment, very enjoyable to watch.
The photo gallery is a good feature as well, we are watching a lot of cool photos, while Tankard blasts in the background. There is a good flow in it and the atmosphere from the photos gets transferred onto the screen.
If you haven't figured it out from the tone in the review, then I am highly impressed by this DVD, it has been reviewed as a fan of the band, because I damn dig those drunk Germans, great band, and someone not being a fan of Tankard, will of course not enjoy a double DVD release, the same way as a fan will. Many writes Tankard off, due to the distinctive vocals from Gerre and the rather immature lyrics once in a while, but the music kicks ass, and the attitude from the band is awesome as well. On stage Tankard is one of the best, entertainers all the way through and they always have the crowd where they want them. The sound on the full liveshow is awesome, heavy, and as clear as needed, there is a lot of punch and a very good live-atmosphere, it is like being sucked into a Tankard concert. All the bonus stuff is awesome as well. The interview is good, I reckon the release of the DVD comes subtitled, I don’t think all around the world is as fortunate as me, and understands German. The outtakes are another good feature as well, a full disc of live-clips, fun and mayhem, just like we like to see it! This DVD is worth all the money and more, a mandatory item for Tankard fans and a good way to be introduced to the band as well, my tankard is now empty, gotta get a refill.
