One of the godfathers of doom and stoner rock Rick Wartell, from the mighty Trouble, is now ready with the first record from his new band Wet Animal. Joining him in the band is long time member Shane Pasqualla (the band was initially formed back in 1995) and the 2 relative new members Jeff "Oly" Olson and Michael "Vito" Diprima. We are treated with high-fuelled rock with a nice doom-laden atmosphere and some stoner-like spheres here and there.
The compositions have their base in good old rock n' roll, made quite heavier once in a while, if not often. There is a killer drive in the tracks, they are rocking away, and one gets easily caught up in the drive and rocks along. The band is very good at weaving their traditional doom parts into their tunes, together with some more stoner-rock-like parts, which are really catchy. The guitarplay on the record is amazing, great hooks, nice licks, catchy leads, swinging melodies, it has it all. The vocals from Shane are pretty amazing as well, huge and very emotional, he has a rather nasal pitch, but varies well, and his performance fits the music really well and adds a lot. The rhythm section is tight as fuck as well, and keeps it all going good, there are some good details here and there, but foremost a solid unit kicking ass.
There is a touching track like 'Left Behind', that is heartfelt and emotional, together with being nice and hard the same time, and the emotional guitar solo can make grown men cry. The technical but very driving 'Don't Put Me Down' that is my favourite on the album, there are some really killer details and effects in that tune, great work. I could keep on going through each track and pull out the good things about them, all the tracks are stars in their own right and very listenable and enjoyable. This album will hit it right away with all fans of hard rock with a touch of blues, and stoner rock. 4 good musicians and songwriters united in a very hard-hitting and mesmerizing band, I do look forward to more material from Wet Animal. Even though it isn't very original, it is all catchy, well-crafted and more than well delivered.
