The out-breaker duo of Grave Digger Uwe Lulis and Tom Göttlich, have become very serious with their new band Rebellion. After they delivered the praised debut album based on Shakepeare's Macbeth, they moved on to do a pure heavy metal onslaught with their second album "Born A Rebel". Earlier this year the band announced that their third album "The Sagas Of Iceland", would be the first album in a trilogy, build upon a historical concept of the Vikings lives, conquests and history, quite a task to take on.
The band attacks the task with great energy and skill. Hard hitting heavy metal tunes, with often a straight forward touch and an overall epic atmosphere. The band does as such tell the stories well, the vocals and the epic choirs are a point of focus. Though often do I note the great and ripping guitar work the most. There are good and classic heavy metal main riffs, good and catchy melodies and some good solos. This is a nice feast for fans of good old school heavy metal, that's for sure, the music purely rocks and that at times seems like a weird base for the stories, the band is telling. Though the powerful vocal from Michael Seifert does keep it on track most of the times, even though I once in a while catch my self in banging away, instead of paying attention to the story.
This album will for sure be a hard hitting addition to the music collection of Rebellion fans' and others into heavy metal. Concerning the task of creating a good concept album, I don't really know what to say. The band does hit it off once in a while, with nice epic atmospheres setting one back in time. Though often does Rebellion focus on their main force, their ripping heavy metal attack, and well isn't that the purpose of a heavy metal band? I would say yes, so even though they have taken on the task to tell the history of the Vikings, why should that keep them from following their own path? This is Rebellion heavy metal spiced up with some epic atmospheres, and great tales from the past, when the mighty Vikings ruled. This is a good heavy metal album that's for sure, the music is worked through, there are plenty of great musical moments and a good story behind the tracks and that's how it should be.
