A new record company, Roadrunner. A new album, "Ghost Reveries". Opeth is back with a new masterpiece for our ears. The whole album is intense, captivating from the first to the last track.

The album opens with 'Ghost Of Perdition', a long song, dark as well, filled with calm passages and others more technical and brutal. A damn good starter. Followed by 'The Baying Of The Hound'. Per Wiberg on keyboards infest this song with a nice 70's prog-rock atmosphere. The whole track is filled with groove. The bass of Martin Mendez is powerful, the technical skills of drummer Martin Lopez seem without limits and the superb guitar parts delivered by Peter Lindgren and Mikael Åkerfeldt are simply outstanding. Mikael's voice is once again hallucinating of power and clarity, may it be on the clean vocal passages or the profound growls.

'Beneath The Mire' is an astonishing track. The keyboard sound is original. The execution of the drums played with much feeling. The bass is impressive. The guitars so powerful, impeccable solos. The clean part of the vocal is beautiful, the darker one as well and the cosmic end is simply delicious.

On 'Atonement', the voice has an effect full of mystery. The percussion gives an oriental feeling to the song while the guitars float on thin air and crystal clear keyboards notes lift the song to a special and unique moment. A beautiful song.

'Reverie' is a short musical interlude which dives in to 'Harlequin Forest' another great track that exploit the Opeth trademark as it's best. The bluesy 'Hours Of Wealth' could easily be played in an old smokey bar. brilliant.

Another impressive track is 'The Grand Conjuration'. The opening is mystical and cold and suddenly a volcanic eruption… Aggressive heavy riffs, fluid solos, huge drumming, present bass and ice cold notes of keys. The voice is so damn grim. A future or already an Opeth classic.

The album closes with 'Isolation Years', After the fury comes a calm and aerial song, almost melancholic with a nice melody.

Difficult to find any negative points on their 8th album, I just have to push the repeat button again now and dive back into their magnificent universe.
