Riverside - Voices In My Head
Release: 2005Label: ArtRock.PL
"Voices In My Head" is the follow up to Riverside's 2004 release "Out Of Myself". This EP comes with five new studio-tracks and three live songs (recorded at the Traffic Club Warsaw, Poland in May 2004). This release does also introduce the new great keyboard player Michal Lapaj.
The EP starts with 'Us' a short melancholic track with accoustic guitar, a soft and mellow voice and an almost ghostly keyboard line, that warms the atmosphere of this calm and nice song. Then we have 'Acronym Love', the piano plays delicately, the voice is soft and the electric guitar solo is filled with emotion, again the bass is very present, but in a way hidden. The drumming suits this song nicely and makes it bigger, while the drumming accelerates smoothly and becomes faster at the end. Piotr impresses us with his guitar play once again !
On 'Dna ts. Rednum or F. Raf' (what a title!!??) Riverside completely hypnotizes the listener. The song grows more and more on you with beautiful accoustic notes, incantating mellow voices, a deep and bumping bass line and mesmerizing smokey keyboard notes floating behind, followed by a great guitar solo. Many changes and different climates occur during this song, the drumming is very clinical and cold, absolutely the best track on this EP. Then we have 'The time I Was Daydreaming', which is an acoustic rhythm-guitar track filled with melancholic vocals, keyboard sounds and a nice solo. The last studio track is 'Stuck Between', a song filled with vocal harmonies and a howling electric guitar.
As I have seen them live, it is very nice to hear those three live songs that comes from the debut album "Out Of Myself". 'I Believe' has this beautiful piano and great guitar playing and the voice is really good. 'Loose Heart' is even more intense live than on the studio recording and the end of the song shows how aggressive Mariusz vocals can be. The EP ends with the brilliant 'Out Of Myself', a really catchy tune and damn well played.
I think this EP is/was kind of limited as it is not listed on their website, and lucky enough was I to grab this one when they came to play live here in Switzerland, so if you can find this one, do not hesitate to pick it up, because it is a great follower to the majestic "Out of Myself" album.
