Code - Nouveau Gloaming
Release: 2005Label: Spikefarm Records
<CODE> is an English/Norwegian Black Metal band, with members from Ulver, DHG, Void and Ved Buens Ende.
“Nouveau Gloaming” is their first full-length consisting of 8 intensive tracks, they also have a demo that came out before, which I haven't heard.
What they have to offer is a mix between melodic Black Metal, some old school riffs, and damn they are well executed, melodic riffs as well, many tempo changes, avant-garde parts and more alternative ones. The vocals varies from black vocals to clean vocals and also spoken texts. It makes me think of Thorns or Satyricon, though not only those 2 bands, there are more to it, but I haven't found out who else it could be, probably Code's own sound.
The whole quality of this album is good. The production is very raw, and every track is well constructed, i really wonder if this band have any rules or limits? The mixture of doomy elements, raw black metal and clean vocals is impressive and can't really be compared to other black metal albums coming out lately, which is a good point for them. The lyrics are well written (first track written by Fenriz and Kvohst). It's not easy to just pick out a song, I really like to listen to the whole album which gives out a special dark atmosphere, but some extra cool tracks are 'The Cotton Optic', 'Brass Dogs', the fast 'Tyburn' and the damn cool 'Ghost Formula'. Certainly one of the best Black Metal releases so far this year. If you're into black metal you should like this one.
