Tour de force crossover metal, leaving nothing to be wished for. Hailing from America and picking up the legacy of ripping thrash crossover which were big in the late 80ties and early 90ties and more or less has been forgotten. Municipal Waste are now ready with their second full length album "Hazardous Mutation", their Earache Records debut. I caught vocalist Tony in a landfill and got answers to some of my questions.

Ripping crossover as in the golden 80ties, though delivered in 2005 with and up to date sound and feel, by Municipal Waste… how did you end up playing that exact, more or less, dead style of metal?

We love that style of music so much that it wasn't really hard at all. We just wanted to play as fast and heavy as possible and it just comes out like that I guess.

How has the new album "Hazardous Mutation" been received?

It seems like it's getting a lot of good reviews. I'm a bit shocked actually because I thought it was going to go right over everyone's heads.

How do you feel about the album?

We like it a lot. We worked very hard on this album and had a really good time recording it.

What do you expect from it?

A shitload of money! (just kidding).

What do you want to accomplish with your music?

We just want to play as many countries as possible and have great time doing it.

You are now on Earache Records, what does that mean to you?

It's pretty cool to be on the same label as so many great bands were on. The people that we have met at Earache are pretty rad and very supportive of all of our stupid ideas.

Will you introduce yourself and tell us why you play metal?

My name is Tony and I play metal because I'm fucking crazy man.

A small introduction of the rest of the band will be killer as well!

Landphil plays bass, Ryan Waste plays guitar, Dave Witte plays the drums and I sing.

When was Municipal Waste formed?

New Years Eve of 2001 at a keg party.

How did you end up with the Municipal Waste band name?

Ryan Waste saw it printed really big on the side of a garbage truck in Washington D.C.

How would you describe your music to a metal head, who never had heard about the band?

We fucking rip dude.

Who is the main song writer in the band?

We all write stuff. We switch it up a lot to keep the songs interesting. Ryan cooks up most of the juicy guitar riffs though.

Where do you find inspiration for the music?

Satan and pizza.

What are the important elements for your songs?

Speed, Heavy and Radness.

How is the new album compared to your old material?

We like the new album a lot more. The last album was rushed so we took our time busting this new one out so we would all be satisfied with all of our performances.

What have you released prior to "Hazardous Mutation" on which labels and are any of the releases still available?

We have another LP ("Waste 'Em All") out on Six Weeks Records. www.sixweeksrecords.com. We have also put out a lot of splits and compilation songs.

Will you initiate us in the lyrical side of Municipal Waste, what are the common lyrical themes etc…?

Monsters, partying, thrashing, killing and chilling.

Who writes the lyrics?

I write most of them not all.

Where is the inspiration for the lyrics found?

Monsters, partying, thrashing, killing and chilling.

Do you have a message you would like to spread to the world through your lyrics?

Yes I do… Monsters, partying, thrashing, killing and chilling.

The cover artwork on "Hazardous Mutation" is made by Ed Repka, why did you choose him to make the cover?

Because we felt that his artwork fit our band the most and we've been wanting to work with him for a really long time. It was a real pleasure to finally do so.

Are you satisfied with his work?

Definitely, I think it looks pretty sick!

Are you going to come to Europe and tour soon, and what about a visit or 2 in Scandinavia?

Yes! We are actually leaving for our second European tour this Tuesday! We will be playing a couple Scandinavian shows as well. Come out and bring a beer bong!

How do you look upon the future of the band?

Tour, tour and tour. That's pretty much all we are trying to do for a long time.

Do you hope to start a new wave of crossover metal?

Not really. We're just 4 dudes playing the music we love and having a blast doing it.

Do you know of other new bands playing crossover and on their way to a little breakthrough?

There's some good ones out there. Destructions End, Holier Than Thou and Reproach to name a few.

Thanks a ton for doing this interview, if you have anything to add, feel free to add it now!

Thanks for the interview! Come see us live and break shit!
