Dark and heavy metal rooted deeply in thrash and death metal, is what The Spawn Of Satan delivers. I learned about the band in 2003, when Hells Headbangers released the split album with Spawn Of Satan and Bloodsick, and I was right away carried away by Spawn Of Satan. This interview is quite old, dating back to the unholy date of 26/12-2003, but it is still very interesting reading and you all deserve to know about this band, and the band deserves recognition. Since this interview was conducted the band has released a split live album with Nunslaughter on Rhapsodeath Productions.

Hails Jim Satanic, please start off by introducing yourself and tell us how your metal adventure started!

Unholy hails to you! I am Jim Satanic front man of the Spawn Of Satan. My adventures in Metal began sometime before I started actually playing in bands. I remember hearing ominous music like Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult as early as 11 yeas old. The older kinds in my neighborhood used to play this stuff for me. I became obsessed with these bands musical efforts and imagery. I was certainly affected without a doubt. I had to have more – it was enticing.

When and how did you know metal was your music and life?

I knew I loved Metal right away, as I got a few years older. I delved into thrash and death Metal. I remember being so excited about my discovery of Metal that I took tapes with me to school to share the wealth of metal with everyone I knew. As you probably guessed, I was shunned and ridiculed by most of them. They called it garbage and unworthy of their support. I was befuddled, but also delighted because this anointing was all mine. They didn't get it. These people are the same assholes who never did anything out of the ordinary or never thought for themselves.  They did what their friends said was cool to do. I did what Metal told me to do.

When did you first start to play Metal, was the guitar your first instrument?

Guitar was actually my initial instrument of choice but after several painstaking months of agonizing lessons, I gave it up. My father insisted that I pursue another instrument, so under his mandate, I chose drums. I was nine years old when this occurred and I have been playing drums and only drums ever since. I love guitar however, especially Metal riffs, it is the ultimate thing for me to hear a good riff.

Spawn Of Satan was formed back in 1989, but your first material was first released in 2002, why did it take so long?

Spawn Of Satan was really just a side band of an already existing band back in 1989. There never really has been a steady line-up with any committed members so source tapes of actual rehearsals are scarce. The songs that appear on the split are actually compositions from 1998 when Chris Dora and Wayne Richards were helping out. We elected to write newer material so they would have more sense of involvement. This was the first documented material since 1992. The '92 session still needs work and is still unreleased. It reflects Spawn Of Satan's approach at the time, which was straight thrash.  I guess you could say that nothing has changed!

Has the band existed as a "real" band since 1989, or have there been breaks or how have things been?

The closest thing that Spawn Of Satan has come to being a real band was about a year ago. We had played a few live shows and had a regular rehearsal schedule. Things were going pretty well, but this has since changed. The bass player is on his way to jail and the others have found something better to do for the time being. Since the early going, we have never really had a solid line-up. It has always been me and one other guy. It sort of resembles the Dave Mustaine syndrome. There were breaks before as people moved away and went to school or just dropped out of the metal world completely. That's more or less why it has taken so long to release some material and why there isn't more out yet. Yet, is the key word.

What about the line-up, has that been permanent through out the years? Can you introduce the rest of the band and ex-members?

Wayne Richards has really been the only mainstay throughout the years. He joined the project in early 1995 and is still involved (when we are working) to this day. Chris Dora has also been with us since 1997. It seems that everybody has something else going on rather than jamming. These two guys are in another band called Soulless which I believe is their primary concern. I am grateful for their assistance and that is probably what it will always be.

Is the material on the split CD with Bloodsick the only material Spawn Of Satan has made, are there any demo releases etc?

Just recently, I came across some material that was unfinished. I need to put vocals down and it needs another guitar track. I think that the original guitars Sam will do. If not, it will be Wayne. I hope that this session will come out. We have 3 other songs in the works, they are also older songs replayed by Chris, Wayne and Geoff. There were eight to ten songs from the 1989-1992 era. Five or six will be released one day in some form or another.

Why did you create a lethal horde as Spawn Of Satan, what was the ideas behind the band?

I started Spawn Of Satan as a result of a lot of underground demos that I was listening to at the time. As you may remember 89-90 was a fantastic year for thrash and death Metal. I was especially influenced by early Morbid Angel that stuff was amazing to me! I like Satanic metal and Spawn Of Satan has given me the chance to create some of my own.

What did inspire you to create a band in the first place?

When you listen to metal you can become inspired to create or invent, I certainly was. I wanted to give back to metal what it gave to me. I just hope that our music can reach and possibly inspire someone the way metal touched me. I'm afraid that this probably will not happen because I was definitely possessed by the powers of metal.

Who were you inspired by in the early days?

Demonic films, classic north, heavy Metal, horror films, dreams were all some way responsible for my devotion to this sick and twisted cause. I can't explain my love for this sick music, I just know that when I hear one of the classics, I get all warm inside. It's magic.

What is the philosophy behind the band, do you have any goals you would like to accomplish with the band?

We want to explore and expose the evil, dark side of world religions. The witched gods and their supernatural powers are phenomenal and can be an unending / unrelenting domain. One can actually convey his/her own interpretations in the music, its folklore and philosophy. With Spawn Of Satan, we want to reach as many fans of underground death metal that will appreciate what we do and how our efforts relate to the unparallel past of this art form.  I would love to have multiple releases with all of them exemplifying the honor and metallic ferocity that has already been displayed on the split CD.

Your lyrics are anti-christian, as is the bands image, why do you hate the church, what has fuelled this hate throughout the time?

Satan is my favorite creations of Catholicism. My family attempted to raise me catholic / Christian, I broke away from the church almost 2 decades ago. My participation with the church was an obstacle in my metal quest. Their dogma and rhetoric is foolish to me. Christianity is what I am most familiar with, so that's where most of my hatred and contempt is directed towards. Ignorance fuels my hate – metal decides my fate.

Your music has base in real metal, and the metal feeling is present throughout the 5 tracks on the split CD, what is metal to you?

Thanks for noticing!! metal is everything to me. When I perform this art I feel the fury of 1000 souls. I want to infect the pure minded with images of evil and thought of death. I want to chain a holy cunt down in a pentagram and teach her the rites of sexual perversion. As black death becomes me, I rise up from smoldering pits of infinity as his most potent being. "Possessed by Fire", I am Satan's assassin and metal's ambassador.

How do you look upon the current Metal scene, is it strong or weak and which new bands do you listen to?

I must admit that I don't listen to as much metal as I used to. The main reason is the disappointment that many bands have brought to me. Bands that were once great or just new bands that sucks right out the gate really have ruined the metal and the movement. I have traded my releases for other bands releases and have been seldom surprised or even impressed. Not because I think that my stuff is the best, but it's when the other band is tainted as being "awesome" or being labeled as "real metal" and then they're not. Metal is all over the fucking place. I go up to distro tables and there's thousands of bands I don’t even know who they are. There are so many releases, I personally feel that a lot of these jokers should be fans of metal instead of being in bands.  Then again, they could say the same about me. The only newer band that I listen to is October 31, King Fowley's band, they are real metal!

In Spawn Of Satan do you control the vokills, a job well done, and you also write the lyrics, how do you find inspiration to your lyrics?

I am the lyricist and vocalist for Spawn of Satan. Thank you for the compliment. I am driven by extreme metal and speed. I love speed metal. With Spawn Of Satan I have tried to combine the eighties thrash sound with a nineties death metal vocal style. I think that Satanic themes go hand - in - hand with aggressive metal. Sometimes, I research some theological topics and draw influence from them. I like to hear about evil prevailing though out history.  Then I put my little demonic spin on it and there's a song.

It's no secret that you under the name Jim Sadist is controlling the drums in NunSlaughter, and are the maker of the guitar riffs in that band, again something done perfectly. How do you come up with your raw, catchy and crushing guitar riffs?

Thanks again for the compliment. I do write all those catchy riffs that you like (thanks). The guitar players work with me and sometimes offer up a riff or two. I have been uniting music and riffs in NunSlaughter for years, something that I really enjoy doing.

Who makes the music in Spawn Of Satan?

The Spawn music writing usually occurs when Wayne Richards and myself collaborate. Chris Dora then decides what tempo the parts will have. Being a drummer myself, I sometimes can offer up an idea in that department. I do a lot of brainstorming when I am alone also. The project is my passion and these gentlemen along with Geoff Hine (lead guitars) are the best musicians and metalheads that I can find. They are the SPAWN OF SATAN.

When will we hear some new material from Spawn Of Satan? We are waiting eagerly after the supreme metal on the split CD!!!

We are planning a few more releases for sure. One will probably be a split 10" with Grenade, a great Aussie thrash band. I am personally going to release a 12" PICTURE DISC split of Spawn Of Satan and another band that has yet to be determined.  This should be out in late summer 2004. It will feature 3 older songs with the latest line-up. I promise that it will be Satanic and it will be Metal as fuck. Thanks again for the kind words regarding our music. I take all opinions into account when I make devil music. I want all of it to be just as heavy if not heavier than the last.

Will you share your three all time favorite albums with our readers?

Well, I don't have just 3, more like 5 or 8.  I want to thank the great Denmark for harboring and unleashing my favorite Metal band. Mercyful Fate will always fucking rule the metal realm!
