The Swedish death metal squadron Centinex has been making a lot of noise for many years now. The band was formed back in 1900 and has so far 8 full lenght albums, a couple of mini albums and some EPs behind them. Even though the releases has become stronger and stronger, peaking with the new album "World Declension", the band has never really gotten the deserved break through in the death metal world. Though the horde of vocalist Johan Jansson, guitarists Jonas Kjellgren and Johan Ahlberg, bassist Martin Schulman and drummer Ronnie Bergenståhl should now be ready to make people turn their heads. I hooked up with Martin Schulman to talk abit about the new album and the band and music in general.
Hey, how are things in Sweden at the moment?
Everything is ok here.
Will you please start off by introducing yourself and tell us why you play death metal?
I'm Martin, the bassist and founding member of Centinex. We play death metal as it's clearly the best form of music.
You are soon ready to release your new album "World Declension", how do you feel about the album?
Yeah the album has now been out for a few weeks. The album is very strong, right now. Clearly the best one we have ever done and it represents how the band sounds
What do you expect from it?
World wide domination. Maybe it will not happen but the album is so strong that it should be that way. Too bad I'm not in charge over the record buying public.
Have received any reactions to the album yet, and how have they been?
The reactions and reviews so far have been really good. But honestly, we are not surprised as the album beats most of today's death metal records by far.
When you started out to write the music for the album, what did you then want to accomplish?
We didn't really have any plans or expectations. We just wrote an album that felt natural for us and the result turned out that way.
Do you feel you have accomplished that?
Yes. Actually the album became even better than what we had expected.
If you had to describe Centinex' progression since the early days until now… how would you describe it?
A natural step forward for every release. The band has become better and better and every new album has been stronger than the one before.
How much further do you think you can take the music and sound of Centinex?
Only armageddon can stop us.
The breakthrough of the band has been lurking right beneath the surface, the latest years, do you think "World Declension" will be the album, that make people give you the acknowledgement that you have deserved through quite some time now?
Yes I do hope so. But as I wrote, I'm not able to force people to buy the album so there's not much I can do. If the kids prefer to spend their cash on worthless keyboard "metal" or lousy stuff played by guys in leather underwear playing around with plastic swords then go ahead. If that's your (bad) taste then you are not even worth owning a Centinex album.
Will you explain the lyrical concept behind "World Declension" and maybe explain the lyrics behind your 3 favorite tracks on the album?
It's about the upcoming armageddon that hopefully will be upon us sooner than we think. Sorry, can’t really pick out 3 favorites as they all slay.
Where do you find inspiration for the lyrics?
From the shit that surrounds me every day.
What are the thoughts behind the album title "World Declension"?
It describes the situation towards which we are heading.
Who are the main song writers in the band?
It's me and both the guitarists. But actually Johan – the vocalist – did also write one track for this album.
Where do you find inspiration for writing the music?
Don't know really…. Been playing and listening to death metal for over 15 years so I think it somehow comes naturally.
How do you know when you have a "perfect" Centinex tune?
When it feels right. I do also tend to shut my eyes and "look" at the track and if it looks good I know it's perfect. Yeah I know, been eating too many mushrooms…
It seems like the band never has had a lot of luck with the labels, how come?
Actually we have had luck as we have always been free to go and change to something better. The unlucky bands are those who are trapped under a worthless contract and decide to do lousy records just in order to get rid of the deal.
Do you think you have found your "home" with Cold Records now?
As it seems now, yes.
A new label and a new great release, are you finally ready to conquer the world?
Yes. We will start with Denmark…
Until the new album, my personal favourite had been the "Bloodhunt" minialbum… Are the more treats in that vein coming up in the near future?
You never know what the future brings… Yeah, "Bloodhunt" is actually one of my favorite albums as well. Especially the title track, we usually end all our concerts with that.
Do you have any tours in the melting pot as support for "World Declension"?
We were supposed to tour Europe in October but it got postponed to January 2006. So then all hell will break loose, can't wait!!
How do you look upon the future of Centinex right now?
Right now it looks kinda good.
Will you share your 5 all time favourite album with the metal heads worldwide?
Entombed – Left Hand Path
Scorpions – World Wide Live
Grave – Into The Grave
Running Wild – Ready For Boarding
Destruction – Infernal Overkill
And all on vinyl of course !!
