The hardhitting band from Chicago has returned with a furious attack of hardcore infused thrash metal. The new album "World Controlled" is an aggressive lesson in how to deliver highly effective and hardhitting hardcore and thrash metal. I got in touch with vocalist and guitarist Marc Duca to hear what the band had been up to since their last album "Crucify The Priest" and what the new album is all about.

Hi there, how are things in Chicago as we speak?

Hot!

Will you please start off by introducing yourself and tell us what it brings you to play metal?

It all started when I first heard Testament's album "The Legacy" that record made me want to play guitar.

You are now ready with your third effort "World Controlled", how do you in the band feel about the album?

We're eager and ready to get out there and fuck shit up.

What do you expect of it?

We expect everyone to play it loud.

How has it so far been received by your fans and the press?

The response is great. The fan support is always there in full force ready to pulverise any venue. The press is also good. I like to read what people are saying, it lets us know how they feel.

How would you describe the band’s progression from "Crucify The Priest" to "World Controlled"?

The first album was recorded live in the living room of our house, in 12 days. "World Controlled" is our first studio recording, and we spent more time with this recording, I think about 6 months or so and the sound quality is much better I think than the first release but I like both albums equally. "Crucify The Priest" has more elements of death metal and black metal with hints of thrash. "World Controlled" is more hardcore anger. Each one reflects different times in our lives. But I think both CDs are Bludgeon-ing so when you put them in your CD player on shuffle, you have all you need.

It has taken you a great while to get the new album ready, not many bands use 4 years at making an album these days, why did it take you that long?

As you can see we went through some changes and that kind of staled every thing but we're ready to go now.

What are your thoughts behind the album title "World Controlled"?

There's always some type of control whether you're the controller or you're being controlled. It seems like more and more we're being controlled or watched, telling us what to buy, what not to buy, with advertisements and TV commercials, cell phones, and cars with GPS, cameras at stoplights and intersections. Is this what a new world order is? It's more like a world controlled.

How is the album's cover artwork connected to the album title?

It represents a new beginning.

Who writes the lyrics in the band?

I wrote all the lyrics for this album and most of the first but we all try to add some input from everyone in the band whether it's a word sentence or a whole verse.

Where is the inspiration for the lyrics found and which lyrical topics have been touched on "World Controlled"?

I get my inspirations from everything that's around me or what I may be feeling at that time in my life. Some songs are a way of getting out my anger, a way of venting out. On The other hand, some are ideas that just come to me. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and find myself writing down lyrics or playing a riff.

Do you have a message with your lyrics and how important are the lyrics compared to the music?

I wouldn't say there's a message but if there is any massage it's don't let anyone tell you how to live your life. Yes the lyrics are just as important as the music.

Who writes the music in the band and how do you work when the music is written, the songs arranged and so forth?

I wrote most of the music for the first album and all but one song on the new one. We all have in put on the structure of the song if someone doesn't like the direction of the song we work together to get it right.

Where do you find inspiration for your music?

I play what I feel inside and it all seems to flow.

What do you wish your listeners to get from your music?

The songs mean something different to everyone. That's what's great about it. Whatever you think it's about might be what it's about.

Do have some touring or the likes planned as support for "World Controlled"?

We plan to play some festivals in the summer and possibly jump on some on-going tours.

How do you look upon the future of Bludgeon and do we have to wait another 4 years to get a new album from you?

I don't think it will take that long this time we plain to keep writing and making albums and do some long touring there’s nothing like being on the road in a different city or town every night. We just love to play in front of a crowd, feeding off their energy - is the ultimate high!

What albums have you been spinning lately?

There are too many to name… but a few are, Slayer, Testament, Exodus, Cannibal Corpse, Slipknot, Deicide, DRI, SOD, Anthrax, Lamb Of God, Kreator... I could go on forever, Sabbath, Zepplin...

Thanks a ton for answering my questions, if you have anything to add, feel free to add it now!

Make sure your head is well rested. I will see you at the show and be prepared to be Bludgeon-ed!
