Dawn Of Demise

Scott and Bjørn in action at AMF 2005
A new Danish death metal band is on the rise, Dawn Of Demise hailing from Silkeborg and featuring that town's most infamous vocalist through out the times Scott Jensen, which you all should know from his days in Infernal Torment. Besides Scott we have his brother Bjørn, who answered this interview and Martin, Jakob and Kim. The quintet kicks a lot of ass with their first demo "...And Blood Will Flow" a New York styled brutal as fuck death metal demo, which should help the band get known around the globe.
Hi there Bjørn, how are things in Silkeborg these days?
Not bad...
Will you please start off by introducing yourself and tell us how you ended up abusing the 4 stringed axe?
Yeah! My name is Bjørn Jensen, I play the bass guitar for danish deathsters Dawn Of Demise. How did I end up playing bass? well... I wanted to play music and it seemed like there were loads that played the guitar and the drums... so I ended up with the bass.
A small introduction of the rest of the band, together with a bit about their strong and weak sides will be very appreciated as well!
Ok... On lead guitar we have Martin, he's our baldy metal-maniac. We all write music for the band, but Martin is definitely the riff-meister. Martin hates Mew and rock music. Filling in on the other guitar, we have Jakob. He is a steady rhythm guitarist who also has started to contribute a bunch a riffs to the music. Jakob is the one with the big afro and all the tattoos. On the drums we have Kim. He is probably the most accomplished musician in the band. Kim loves fast thrash metal and old-school heavy metal.... you'll find him behind his huge drum-kit... a little redhead. Last but not least we have Scott on the vocals. Scott used to be in Infernal Torment. He's our seasoned veteran. He's the one with the Suffocation t-shirt and the big beard... usually growling... AAAArrrrggghhhh!!! Weak sides? I don't think so? hahaha!!!!
Dawn Of Demise is a pretty new band, how and why did the band start, and how did you end up with the name Dawn Of Demise?
Some of us played together in a melodic thrash band before Dawn Of Demise. We weren't able to find a singer, so Martin and I started what later came to be known as Dawn Of Demise.... and I think it was Kim that came up with the name.
What would you like to accomplish with the band?
We want a record deal... we want to release a full-length..... and last but definitely not least, we want to play loads of gigs. And I'm not just talking about Denmark... We would love to tour the rest of Europe and of course America and the rest of the world... hahaha!!!! We want to get out there and show people what we are about.
You released your first demo "…And Blood Will Flow" last year, how has it so far been received?
Incorrect... We released it this year. I believe it was in the beginning of February? It's been received very well, even better than we could have hoped for. It's been reviewed on 8-9 sites, and the worst review gave us 4 out of 6... So we can't complain.
How do you in the band feel about the demo nowadays?
We love it! But now we are hoping for a deal, we really would love to record a full-length.
What did you expect of it and has it fulfilled your expectations?
We expected to get loads of gigs out of it, and that has worked out quite well... We also hoped for a deal, and we have had 3 offers so far... But none of them have suited us yet. We are waiting for the right label to come along.
If you could pick a label perfect for releasing Dawn Of Demise's music, what label would you choose?
I don't know? There are a lot of great labels out there. I would probably mention a bigger label, but what demo-band wouldn't?
Are you working on new material as we speak and when can we expect to see and hear new material from you and in what form?
We're always working on new songs... You can hear and see them live. The next recording will be a full-length, but we have nothing planned yet. We are waiting for a label.
Do you have some good news, as some song titles, musical direction etc… of the new material?
Some titles.. haha! ok... 'Within The Flesh', 'Regain Or Masochist'... the rest haven't been named yet. The style is the same: heavy as shit New York styled death metal.
Who are the main songwriters in the band?
We all write music for the band, but Martin has probably written the most. After him maybe me and then Jakob, but he's working on it. If he keeps up the good work, then he'll overtake me very soon...haha!!!! But basically all songs are collaborations.
Where is the inspiration for the music found?
In the heavier death metal bands... like for example Suffocation, Pyrexia, internal Bleeding, Dying Fetus and maybe some of the older Cannibal Corpse. We also get some inspiration from bands like Nevermore, Meshuggah and a shitload of thrash bands, but mainly the US death metal stuff.
Can you mention 3 bands and 3 songs that have meant a lot to you and the sound of Dawn Of Demise?
Suffocation – 'Thrones Of Blood'.... Pyrexia – 'Confrontation'.... Cannibal Corpse – 'I Cum Blood'. I could go on going, but it's definitely songs like these that have inspired our songwriting.
Let's turn to the lyrics, who is the master behind them?
That would be me.
How important are they compared to the music and is there a message behind them, or is it pure entertainment?
The most important thing for us is the music. Lyrics aren't all that important, just as long as they fit in and the content is okay. There's no deeper meaning, only violence, blood and death=good old fashioned death metal style.
Will we soon see you embark on a small Danish/Euro/Scandinavian tour, or how does it look with the live activities?
We would love to go abroad and play loads of gigs, but thus far we only have a few domestic ones.
How do you look upon the future of Dawn Of Demise?
Positively... In the near future I'm sure we will land a deal, and from there on..... Who knows? But we're all very optimistic in the band.
Do you care to share your 5 all time favourite albums with the readers of Nocturnal Horde?
Ok.
Suffocation - Pierced From Within
Suffocation - Effigy Of The Forgotten
Pyrexia - System Of the Animal
Death - Individual Thought Patterns
Morbid Angel - Covenant...
But I could go on... it's so difficult. It would be more fair if you asked me to name 50...
Thanks a ton for answering all my curious questions, if you have anything to add, feel free to fire now!
