The Deviant

The Deviant
The Deviant is pretty new band, which released their debut album "Ravenous Deathworship" earlier this year on Tabu Records. The Norwegian band consists of Dolgar, E.N. Death, Violator and Blod, and I'm sure most of you will recognize those names from bands as Forlorn, Gehenna and 122 StabWounds. The Deviant has risen from the ashes of 122 StabWounds and is now ready to conquer the world. I had a good chat with guitairst E.N. Death about the band, the new release and what to expect of The Deviant in the future...
Hi! Things are very cold here in Norway. Besides that there aren't too much to say. We rehearse a lot these days. There are a couple of gigs and festivals that we shall play soon. Otherwise we work hard with music for the upcoming 2nd release.
Will you please start off by introducing yourself and tell us how you ended up on the path you now are walking?
I'm E.N.Death and play the guitars in The Deviant. I used to play bass in Gehenna. And have played in Forlorn under the name C. Worhn. We have all been friends for many years, so we started a band called 122 StabWounds in 1993. We recorded one album "The Deity Of Perversion" in 1996. After that we all have been occupied with other bands. And now finally we got time to "restart" the band and The Deviant rose from the absence of 122 StabWounds.
A small introduction of the rest of the band, together with what they contribute to The Deviant with will be much appreciated as well!
On lead guitar we have Violator. Blod plays the drums and Dolgar handles the bass and vocals. A solid gathering of musicians in my mind.
The Deviant was created out of the ashes of 122 StabWounds, when was 122 StabWounds officially disbanded and when did The Deviant come to life?
122 SW actually never "disbanded": All members got busy doing other stuff (Gehenna and Forlorn etc.) so we had very little time to concentrate on 122 SW. But after a while (in 2002) we decided to focus more on 122 SW. We changed name to The Deviant and the rest is history. Check out 122 SW's album "The Deity Of Perversion"!
How do you see the differences between the 2 bands and how have the previous members of 122 StabWounds developed in the time between the bands, the last 122 StabWounds release?
There are lots of similarities between the bands, but we have grown both musically and lyrically. The Deviant are a more solid and hardworking band than 122 StabWounds. That is the main difference. The members have been busy playing in bands like Gehenna and Forlorn. And have taken influences from these bands into The Deviant's music. It works really great I think.
Besides 3 members of 122 StabWounds, you have Dolgar in the band to handle the vocals, how did that come about and what you think he adds to The Deviant?
Dolgar is a good friend of us. He has always liked the things we have done with 122 SW and The Deviant. So we just asked if he would be interested in joining us. And luckily he was. He has added a new dimension to our music with his raw vocals. I get the chills whenever he opens his mouth and spill his guts.
What would you like to accomplish with The Deviant?
Hehe… Good question. I have to be honest and say that we don't have any large/main goals with The Deviant. Off course we hope to sell many records and play lots of festivals and tour the world. But we play the music we like and hopefully people are happy that The Deviant exists. But to tour with a major band like Morbid Angel or Slayer etc… would be a dream come true for us.
Your debut album "Ravenous Deathworship" will be released February 13th, how has the press so far received the album and what do you expect of it?
So far the album has gotten an overwhelming response. It seems like we have found the right "formula" in our music. We in a way knew that we had good songs and potential to play fast and tight. So all in all we are very satisfied. Hope that we can go on a tour soon and present our music to the masses.
What do you want to tell with the album title, what are your thoughts behind it?
There isn't any particular meaning. It just sounded really cool we thought. And it fitted our music and lyrics perfect. We worship death and things unholy, haha!
What is the band lyrically about and who writes the lyrics?
We all write the lyrics. They are anti-christian, contains violent sex, death, pain and unholiness. Clear and simple, haha.
Where is the inspiration for the lyrics found and do you have a message with them?
It comes from our own minds. I can't speak for the others, but I get inspiration from the hate towards christianity and its weak believers. And of course from all the fucked up happenings that hit our world every single day. We have no particular meaning with the lyrics, we just wish to explain what’s on our minds.
Are there any actual events that have influenced any of the lyrics on "Ravenous Deathworship"?
No. Or as I mentioned above, the christian belief is a major topic/event to express hate towards to. So I can say that the whole album is more or less influenced by this shitty religion.
Who is the main music writer in the band?
Violator makes most of the music. He is an incredible skilled songwriter. And we are satisfied with the music he makes, but hopefully the other members can contribute more on the next album.
Where is the inspiration for the music found and what do you wish to "tell" with it?
I guess Violator draws his inspiration from listening to violent music, watching snuffy porn movies or maybe when he has problems with his bitch(hahaha). Seriously he just makes riffs that comes into his mind, but some perverted and corrupted thoughts is very helpful in the process I believe.
Can you pull out 3 bands and 3 songs that have meant a lot to you and the way you think music?
Easily!! Morbid Angel, Slayer and Deicide. The songs are more difficult, but 'Hell Awaits' by Slayer. Actually I could say most of Slayer's music has meant a lot to us. Morbid Angel's 'Rapture' and 'Sacrificial Suicide' by Deicide has had enormous impact on our metal stained minds.
Your first release was the demo "Intimate Skinning", which was released, last year, how was that received and is it still available?
We got quite a lot of good feedback on it. Many labels were interested in signing us. But when it came to choosing label it was no doubt at all. Tabu can and does a great job for us. So luckily we didn't jump on the first and best offer. We still have a few copies left, so if anybody is interested, contact us.
How has the band developed since the demo?
Not much. All the songs that are on the demo are also featured on the album. And the album was recorded shortly after the demo, so we had no time to develop, hehe. But for the next album we hope to develop a lot.
How do you look upon the current issue with the "Muhammad drawings"?
Oohh. Very touchy subject. I wish not to comment this question. Hope that is ok??!! But I guess all know what we all think about it, since we are from Norway I mean.
Will you engage in some touring in support of "Ravenous Deathworship"?
Hopefully we can do a tour. By the time speaking we have no concrete plans of a tour. But this is a goal we very much would like to achieve. To tour is a very, very important issue when thinking about promotion etc.
How do you look upon the future of The Deviant?
The future looks bright. We have gotten a good start, the rest is up to ourselves. We have a hardworking and serious label backing us up. People are accepting our music, which is the hardest task if you want success. We shall play lots of gigs and give people what they want.
