Shining Fury is a heavy/power metal band hailing from Italy and they caught my interest with their new album "Another Life", which is the band's second effort. I was especially impressed by the singer's voice, whihc carries the music a long way and brings a lot of joy to the listener of the album. Though the music is delivered very good, as well, a decent album the band has made, there is no doubt about that. I caught up with guitarist and one of the song-writers Federico Accardo and got a good chat with him.

Hi there, how are things in Italy as we speak?

Hello, things are going pretty good here. The band is going well and I'm having a lot of satisfaction in this period of my life

Will you please start off by introducing yourself and tell us why you deliver your metal in Shining Fury?

My name is Federico Accardo, I play guitar in the band and I joined them when Ross Lukather asked me if I was interested in recording the second album with Shining Fury. I decided to start this new project when I realized that it would become a good experience, with other good musicians.

A small introduction of the rest of the band, together with what they contribute with, will be great as well!

The band was formed in 2001 by drummer Ross Lukather in order to create fast and melodic songs. After the release of the debut album "Last Sunrise" as a result of musical divergences Ross decided to change bass and guitar players. After few weeks he found the right people to complete the definitive Shining Fury new Line-up: Francesco Tonazzini (Guitar), Andrea Bartoletti (Bass) and Federico Accardo (Guitar). Last summer Shining Fury entered the FP Recording Studios to record their second strike!
Everybody have a different musical background. Ross likes heavy metal; Francesco N. likes rock and progressive; Andrea listen to metal and rock; Francesco T. likes death metal; I'm usually influenced by various genres from blues to hard rock, funk, progressive etc.
I think this is a good thing for a band, everybody put his personal "vision" of the music, and we have different ones... this is positive for the songwriting process.

You are now ready with your second album "Another Life", how do you in the band feel about it?

I'm young and I just recorded an album for Metal Blade, I'm doing interviews, and people are buying CDs with my music on, and if I write my name on the net I can find lot of stuff! How could I feel about that? I feel strange! Lol! I'm so proud about that, but I think it's a small dowel that could help to build up my way as a musician.

How has it so far been received by the press and your fans?

I think it's going good, but it's too early to say that....

What do you expect of the album?

A lot of concerts and a tour.

What do you wish to accomplish with the band and your music in general?

I'd like to work well with the band, doing concerts and write new material for future projects. About me... I'm just trying to work as a musician and build the way, day by day.

What does the album title "Another Life" cover and what are your thoughts behind it?

It's mostly referred to the changes that are happened in the band. Line-up changes and a new musical style. The "new life" of the band.... "Another Life".

Who writes the lyrics in the band?

Francesco Neretti wrote the lyrics on "Another Life".

Where is the inspiration for the lyrics found?

The inspiration comes from personal experiences about his life.

Which themes are touched on the new album and what do you want to tell with your lyrics?

The themes are various and speak about sex, the past, vices and sins from a lived life based to escape from these demons.

The great cover artwork is both cryptic and very saying, and leads one, onto the theme of drugs and getting out of it, is it only the title track that deals with that topic, or is it a theme throughout the album?

The man responsible for the cover is Jan Meininghaus, the cover shows a man (the one in the picture) that is tormented by the demons of the past (girl, the child). Now he wants to change his life, but he must face the ghosts from the past and he can't escape from his bad deeds: The past returns sooner or later.

Have any in the band had any problems with drugs in the past, is the album built on personal experience?

The band doesn't have drug-problems and never had.

If we take the song 'The Haunting', what is that exact song about, judging on the outro of the track, one could think the theme was political, is that correct and what do you think of mixing metal with politics?

The intro and outro from 'The Haunting' does not have a political theme. There are some voices speaking, but it doesn't have a particular meaning.

How important are the lyrics for the band, both in general and compared with the music?

The lyrics are important because they have to fit good with the music. We usually write the music and then Francesco N. writes the lyrics on it. For that fact we just write the music and leave to Francesco N. the task to create a good lyric, so he's free to write about the things he prefer.

Great and classic-inspired power metal with some good elements are what you deliver, where do you find the inspiration for the music?

I find inspiration in a lot of things. The personal experiences, the state of mind, facts that happen every day. My greatest inspiration is from states of mind such as love and hate. Strong opposing feelings, but often very close.

Who's the main-writers in the band and how do you work when you write music and arranging the songs?

The main-writers are the guitar player, but others work great to help and create parts too. Arrangements are done with various guitar tracks. The concept is to create some parts that work as a keyboard, but heavier and powerful.

What do you want people to experience with your music?

Passion, joy, energy and power. A good heavy metal album, with good ideas and well played.

2 members left the band after the release of your first album "Last Sunrise", how did that affect the band?

Those changes have affected the band in a way, which has turned Shining Fury into creating harder and more powerful music. The guitars are now heavier and the songs have more complex riffs and guitar arrangements There's no keyboard and that is giving more power and energy to the sound of the band.

The vocals on the album are amazing, and the reason I got caught in the world of Shining Fury, does Francesco have any training and how has he gotten that good at keeping the tones?

Francesco is a great singer. He said to me he had a little training period with his voice, but most of it is natural talent

Especially the high vocals are amazing, never falling of the tones or breaking, almost sounds like it's a girl singing at times, how is it to be blessed with such a great singer?

This is a great thing for the composition! You don't have to ask if the song you are writing will be ok for the singer's voice. You just do whatever you want with the music because you know that the singer will sing on it without problems! And this is so rare, trust me! Lol.

How much does he bring to the music and the atmosphere of the band?

His voice contributes to the sound of the band too! It gives more power and freshness with his high and sharp tone.

You have chosen to cover Deep Purple's great tune 'Highway Star', why did you chose that exact song and what does it mean to you?

Everybody have a different musical backgrounds, but when we talk about Deep Purple we are all agreeing. Another reason is that Francesco was the singer of a Deep Purple cover-band and he likes the song very much.

Do you have any touring planned in support for the album?

There is nothing confirmed yet

How do you look upon the future?

I have a lot of ambitions as a musician, but you have to face the truth... it's not easy, especially here in Italy. About the band... I hope that the album will be appreciated and things will move in the right way.

Will you share your 5 all time favourite albums with the readers of Nocturnal Horde?
