There has been a long silent period from the war mongers in Swedish In Battle, though the silence was broken with the EP "Soul Metamorphosis" and later on a new assault was crafted in form of the full length "Welcome To The Battlefield". After the release of "Welcome To The Battlefield" last year, I got the chance to talk to mainman John "ODHINN" Östlund Sandin.

You are now ready with your new album "Welcome To The Battlefield", what Do you think about it?

Hello!! yes everything feels alright.. But we just wait for the response of the audience.. But for us everything feels good we are proud over this piece of art.

What do you want to accomplish with the album?

To show the world that Death metal musicians are good musicians and works professional as well as other musicians... That’s one of our goals.. But we want to be a good brutal band who is going to tour as much as we can

I was a bit surprised when I first listened to it, I was hoping for something close to your killer album from 1998 "The Rage Of The Northmen", but got a bit surprised, though not disappointed. How did the band evolve into what it is now?

Ahh man its evolution.. We have all been growing up and wanted this band to sound like this...we love brutal music.. A nd I think it shows on this album... Don’t ya think?)

Has your personal preferences regarding music changed since "Rage Of The Northmen" is that a part of the answer?

Not really man.. I think that the “Rage Of The Northmen” is similar to this one...but I think this one is more professional recorded and we are better musicians now... You will se when we come to your hometown to play...we do play the old songs too...live.

What about your worldview etc...?

Too much idiotism and fucking religions destroying everything... Every problem starts with fucking religion... Fuck that!

You have "resurrected" as a really strong brutal and technical death metal squadron, what do you like about the style you are playing now?

I think In battle fits just right in the death/thrash scene… we really love this

kind of brutal music...and hey we are not technical...we are tight... that’s the difference.

What inspires you when you write music?

Everything has a part in our way to be inspired and doing music… both natural and spiritual... I think all old bands have been a good source for us... like band as

Kreator, Slayer, Gorefest and Death.. But also the place we live in... the north of Sweden, both folklore and the great landscape we live in the middle of... old stories about different gods… ghosts and trolls etc etc.. Has been part of the evolution IN BATTLE has gone through.

You are still delivering war-metal... what is fascinating about war themes?

All I can say is… What is more brutal than war?? That’s the most brutal way of being and everything that follows war are brutal too...

Will you tell us a bit about the lyrics?

A lot of the lyrics is both of ancient wars with the Northern mythology as the main theme... and some of the lyrics tell stories about daytime war… And the future wars that lay ahead of us. The Swedish lyrics is more to get this sear ten feeling and atmosphere in the song...but the lyrics is about the great fire beasts of Muspelheim that will swing their swords in the Ragnarök.

Where do you find inspiration for your lyrics?

In myself… I think I have to hear at the songs we have recorded to get the feeling to do the perfect lyric to the special song… Just to get this atmosphere we got to have…

How important are the lyrics compared to the music?

I think its very important that the lyrics fit the music perfectly… To get the message out in the best way...

Does In Battle work as a real band now?

I don’t know what you mean as real band but...yes we work together to get as much as possible out of each other musically.

When will we hear more new music from you?

We hope we will start to record the next album in the start of 2005… We have already some new songs ready for an upcoming album. A more varied but still brutal album.

Is there a tour ahead?

Yes in Germany we are going in November 2004… I hope to come your way too mates!

Will you share, the 3 albums you listens most to right now, with the Scandinavian death metal heads?

I listen to KRAUKA one of the best bands I ever have heard from Denmark...but right now... I listen to:

Samael - Reign Of Light
Hate Eternal - King Of All Kings
Garmarna - Vittra

Thanks a ton for answering my questions, the final remarks are yours!
