DrChud's X-Ward

Dr. Chud
When talking about legendary drummers in the punk scene the name Dr. Chud always pops up. He has worked with many high profile acts including The Misfits and Joey Ramone. Here we have his answers to questions concerning his past, present, and future as well as whats going on with his current band X-Ward.
Hello, please introduce yourself and tell us what your role in X-Ward is?
I am The Abominable DR.CHUD. Singer/Songwriter of my Horrorpunk band The X-Ward.
Will you please introduce your band mates and tell us a bit about them?
Well there are too many great players to name, I guess you can say I'm the Frank Zappa of horrorpunk. On this tour ("Blooddrive 05"), I sing, Dr. Argyle Goosby on bass (also played on the 2004 Dr.Chud's X-Ward debut "Diagnosis For Death" and is also in Gorgeous Frankenstein, Doyle from the Misfits new project), Dr. Placebo on drums, Rebecka Nurse on guitar and MD Fetus Eater on guitar.
What inspired the name X-Ward and what does it mean to you?
It's the place we all end up sooner or later, the final journey into the afterlife. It's the place I feel I'm relating to so much at this point of my life.
What were your intentions when you formed the band?
To create music I liked and be able to continue to grow as an artist.
Was it an easy decision to make everything "medically" themed, having doctors, orderly's etc?
Fate. I guess I never really thought about it. My family was in the medical field and they always wanted me to be a doctor!
The new album is called "Diagnosis For Death" what is the meaning this title?
I can't tell you yet but it isn't cause I'm dying, but you could say it's a metaphor for were I'm taking X-Ward musically.
Are you pleased with the way the album has turned out?
Yes, it's awesome.
Are there any songs on there that you are particularly fond of? Can you tell us a bit about them?
My favorite is 'Goodbye', It's about that last word you might not have time to say to someone before they leave us. I usually don't write 7 minute songs but this one was worth it!
How long was the writing and recording process?
It's always time consuming, but that's life. I use different writing methods all the time.
Do you write all the lyrics and music yourself?
95% of the time I do.
Do you have to be in a certain mood to be able to write the lyrics and music?
No. The best songs come out through anger.
How did the tour go?
"Blooddrive 2005" It was bloody, we had live worms and maggots all over us, we had real meat on stage, we had hot evil nurses running wild, we had a lot of fun, probably the best tour to date.
Are there any shows that stand out in your mind from this past tour? Where were they and what were they like?
There were so many but I'd have to give it up for Chicago, they have a scene, I'd say one of the best in the U.S.
I'll try to make this short – It was Friday morning Chicago at 8am, it was the first time I ever had to cancel a show, I called upon old touring buddies Secret Agent Bill to see what we can do? Eight hours later there was a huge line weighting to get into the basement of a shoe store, we called it "The Devils Dungeon". The show was amazing, all because of their awesome scene! The last time I did a show in a basement I was about 14!
Do you get a good response from the crowd when you play?
Yes.
Are you looking forward to touring again sometime soon?
I am thinking about Europe and Japan for next year.
Do you have any funny or interesting stories from the road?
Funny or interesting? No, just frigging insane stories.
Out of all of your recorded works, which one stands out as your favorite?
My latest – DrChuds X-Ward: “Diagnosis For Death”.
A lot of bands have come from Lodi, New Jersey which ones are your favorites?
Sardonica, Slaughtered Grace, Misfits, X-Ward and MOD.
X-Ward is different from your previous works like Sacred Trash, how do you manage to keep things sounding fresh?
Ya never stop growin do ya?
What was your first band? What were they like and what style music did you play?
I believe it was KAOS in 1977; we did covers and originals, mostly good rock songs from the seventies.
Can you mention a few metal albums that have meant a lot to you?
Sure. Metal? Of course this means all their records! Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin.
Can you also mention a few punk albums that you have drawn inspiration from?
Misfits, DOA and The Police.
You have released "Diagnosis For Death" on purple vinyl, is it important to you to make your albums released on something as special as vinyl?
It's fun to collect vinyl just for its size alone, you just have more of a feel of what the artist is trying to convey, they don't draw art on a 5x5 piece of canvas do they?
Will you continue to make your recordings available on vinyl in the future?
Sure!
Do you collect vinyl yourself? Do you have any prized possessions in your collection?
Hmm, I guess you can call it a collection, but it's more of what had survived over the last 30 years.
What does the metal/punk underground mean to you?
It's the battleground where bands are made! Only the DEAD survive!
Are there any horror movies in particular that have made a big impact on you?
Dead Alive, Bride Of Frankenstein, Hellraiser and many more!
How do you feel about the horror movie remakes that have been popping up over the last few years?
Haven't rented them yet! hahaha
What are your plans for the future?
I'm working on a new CD and videos, and then I'll hit the road again.
Thank you for you time, is there anything else you would like to add?
Listen and watch videos of the band NOW!
