Devious – Vision [
Deity Down Records 2009]

Dutch Devious has a couple of albums on their back, though this is my first encounter with them. The promotional material and other sources slate the music as death metal with thrash metal roots, though it didn't take many listens, before the music reveals itself to contain a lot more.
The base is in heavy and chugging death metal, good pretty catchy riffs and good breaking rhythm patters, it is mixed with some groovy thrashy guitar here and there and a heavy bottom by the bass. So far so good, even though it is pretty traditional, looking away from the modern approach here and there.
The interesting part comes now, the band is splendid in working melodic and quite symphonic pieces into the music. Both with the guitar, which delivers some really nice sweeping melodic pieces throughout the album and with keyboards, which might sound a bit off, while reading it here, though while listening to the album, it works really well and adds a lot to the overall impression of the album.
The lads in Devious are good songwriters as the music and the composition thereof stand out really strong on 'Vision', we have the brutal death metal pieces, all the melodic work, the atmospheric symphonic synth and some really catchy hooks, which at times also could work in a great pop-tune. Really well-though compositions and quality song writing.
I don't think this is an album the ordinary death metal head will get into easy. Though all that likes their metal out of the ordinary, exciting and with a good atmospheric twist and diversity, without losing the brutality, will dig 'Vision'. A well made album with some good music.
