Obliteration – Perpetual Decay [Tyrant Syndicate 2007]

Norwegian death metallers Obliteration got their debut full length released on Tyrants Syndicate, the imprint under Peaceville, run by Darkthrone. Obliteration has roamed the Norwegian underground for a while and released the stellar EP 'Total Fucking Obliteration' in 2005, and is as I write this, finishing their upcoming album, if they aren't done with it already and waiting for it, to see the light of day, so why not a few words about their first album?

The death metal streaming out of the speakers, when pressing play, is heavy as fuck, with a dark and crushing production, which is really fitting for this music. A deep bottom, laying the ground for the chugging guitar riffs, sweeping across the sound picture, sucking in the listener, while creating the sinister and pitch black evil atmosphere that surrounds the 10 tracks on 'Perpetual Decay'.

Growls from beyond this world paints the top of the sound picture, together with some of the riffing, a deep guttural gasp, inspired by the mighty Chris Reifert of Autopsy and Abscess, 2 bands that can be heard as an inspiration in the music as well, together with such bands as Incantation and the likes of the early obscure death metal wave from America, nothing bad at all. Though Obliteration puts their mark on their music and makes it their own attack of obscurity and brutality.

A great death metal album that marks the beginning of something that could become a class act in a little time, not that varied an album, though 10 slaying and brutal tracks that people into this kind of death metal will suck in and enjoy more than once, I know I have and I am looking forward to that new album, that soon will arrive, hopefully!
