MTV Headbangers Ball Tour 2009 - Dawn Of Demise – HateSphere – Illdisposed

Bjørn - Dawn Of Demise

First in the fire this evening, straight out of Silkeborg, though still at their home turf, as they themselves express it, Dawn Of Demise, one of the heaviest and most brutal death metal outfits on the Danish scene.

They took the stage with usual power and brutality. If you're into heavy death metal and pummeling intensity, you won't go wrong when Dawn Of Demise is controlling the stage. The stage presence of the brothers in crime, growler Scott Jensen and bassist and back-up growler Bjørn Jensen is immense and brings the band over the edge of the stage. Always moving or posing, hitting the strings, growling or fooling around, the latter mostly goes for Scott.

That was also the case this night, in between the hard hitting steamrolling brutality, we got some thoughts on this and that, some nice white stomach and some ass-growling, nice white cheeks we got in our faces there. That aside, Scott is a born frontman and he knows how to get the audience going and on top of that, he possesses a guttural growl from hell, he just tends to get a few beers too many, but what the heck, it's good brutal fun.

The band did also deliver their part and a tad more, tight and straight on all the time. On top of all th good 'old' tunes, we got a couple of new ones, where especially the heavy and chugging 'Juggernaut' stood out as something to look forward to, when their new album hits the street somewhere in between 1 and 6 months, according to Scott.

Dawn Of Demise is always a good way to kick off the party, and this night wasn't a difference.

Joller - HateSphere

Next up was HateSphere, melodic thrashing madness from Århus and always up for a good stage fight and more energy than a couple of handfuls of energizer bunnies. Joller at the microphone was on from the very beginning and lead the battle all the way through the set. Energetic as hell and all over the place, he really took on the task, controlled the audience and performance from the beginning to the very end.

The band lead on by Pepe was also in the game and did deliver their part and got over the stage and into the crowd. HateSphere has the ability to blow away most people that seeing them, with sheer energy and the joy they show when playing the tunes. They also did good this night and showcased their material really well. All the new tracks worked out really well, the aggressive ones as 'Backstabber' and 'Oceans Of Blood' was kicking ass and the old tracks they played showcased the good old HateSphere energy mixed with melodies. The track 'Clarity' from 'To The Nines', one of the tracks on there, where samples are incorporated, worked out really well on the stage as well. An approved lesson in metal by HateSphere.

The headliner this night, Illdisposed, can hardly hit a wrong ball. The last time I saw them was at Aalborg Metal Festival last year, and that was the so far weakest performance from the band, I've seen and it wasn't bad at all, just Bo Summer running out of breath a little too often. Of course did I expect the same this night, but damn Bo wanted it otherwise. He must have been in heavy condition training, as he could growl and scream as in the good old days, and he delivered 4 or 5 tracks in a row, before he started talking about being old and needing a break, the rebirth of Bo Summer.

We got a good slap of tracks with focus on the 4 most recent ones, with 3 or perhaps 4, I think from the spanking new 'To Those Who Walk Behind Us'. Those tracks worked out really great live, together with the 2 we got from '1-800 Vindication'. It was also great to hear 'There's Something Rotten... In The State Of Denmark' and my highlight of the night was when the veterans in Midtempo FC churned out 'Submit', that kicked some ass. Though an overall nice walk around the band's discography.

They closed with 2 album closers for the encore, first we got the closer on 'To Those Who Walk Behind Us', 'Nu Gik Det Lige Så Godt', a great track that also worked out well live, though Bo complained that now he finally had written a track in Danish, he couldn't remember more than 3 words. After that we got 'Ich Bin Verloren In Berlin' from 'The Prestige'.

Franz - Illdisposed

Illdisposed took the stage with a big fuck you all to the 2 prior bands and re-conquerored the throne as Denmark's leading veteran death metal band and live performers. A great closing on a great arranged gig, showcasing 3 leading bands in Denmark on 3 different stages in their career: Upcoming, established and veteran and heavy as fuck! There were also a nice turnout and somewhat surprising to me, it seemed like there was a smaller crowd for HateSphere, than the 2 other bands. It also seemed like a more packed crowd than last year, where Mercenary headlined, flanked by Last Mile, Pilgrimz and Raunchy.

2 special highlights was the unimpressed way Joller from HateSphere handled to get his bassist's shorts over his head, while screaming, delivered by a fast Franz Hellboss. And later on Johnny Haven's, from The Burning, growling and screaming on 'Shine Crazy' I think, from 'Burn Me Wicked' while Bo Summer had a little break, before the last few tracks.
