Classic Scandinavian Albums

Emperor - 1992, 1993 and 1998 - Emperor/Wrath Of The Tyrant
Jul 5, 2006 by AvNatten
After a month's break, the Scandinavian metal classics feature is back, this time with some of Norway's proud sons. Emperor's demo "Wrath Of The Tyrant" and their following EP "Emperor". Both releases are classics within black metal, or perhaps even within metal in general and both have influenced heaps of bands. The original releases are quite hard to get ones hands on these days, though Candlelight Records has released both releases on one CD, so they are both obtainable and quite mandatory in every black metal fans' collection.

Not much we decided, so below you can read our accounts of Finland's Stratovarius' album "Episode", which by some accounts you already should know by now!

Katatonia - 1993 and 1995 - Dance Of December Souls and For Funerals To Come...
Mar 13, 2006 by Deek
Doom metal in its various forms have always had a solid following. The death/doom style that came to life in the early 90ties soon gathered a lot of fans as well, a doom genre that fans of more extreme music also could enjoy. One of the bands that was a part of painting the genre was Katatonia, the Swedish band that through the years has been through an incredible development, without loosing its identity. The band's first full length album "Dance Of December Souls" is here in focus, a gem more people need to know about! And as an addition we have also taken the following EP from the band "For Funerals To Come" with, as that release is a beauty in itself.

Bathory - 1986 - Under The Sign Of The Black Mark
Feb 8, 2006 by AvNatten
The cold and dark January has passed and as we walk towards lighter days, let's spread some darkness over them with the classic album of February, Bathory's classic that was unleashed onto the world in 1986 "Under The Sign Of The Black Mark", chaotic, noisy blasphemy in its purest form.

Mercyful Fate - 1984 - Don't Break The Oath
Jan 2, 2006 by Anders
Yet a month has flown by, and as it was December, it means that we now have hit a new year... The first Scandinvian classic album that we have choosen to feature, in this new, hopefully ungodly year, is Mercyful Fate's second album "Don't Break The Oath", is there a better way to start a new year, than to the tones of this amazing album?

Thergothon - 1994 - Stream From The Heavens
Dec 1, 2005 by Deek
Time flies, way too fast, November is over and December has started, and is there a better way to start this hellish month, than with a good slab of classic funeral doom, the album and band that crafted the genre and made it what it became. Thergothon's "Stream From The Heavens" is all you need to get well through the christmas madness.

Unleashed - 1993 - Across The Open Sea
Nov 1, 2005 by AvNatten
Yet a month has passed and while we are entering winter on the Northern hemisphere Unleashed appeared to make ravage with their 1993 album "Across The Open Sea", the album where they started to introdce Viking themes into their lyrics, quite a benchmark for death metal in general concerning lyrical content. Musically quite good as well, the opinions on the album are quite alike, with one standing outside the circle of Unleashed worship.

Amorphis - 1994 - Tales From The Thousand Lakes
Oct 1, 2005 by Tordah
Behold the featured Scandinavian classic of October, this month we have dissected this Finnish giant, so please go forth and read the result.

Darkthrone - 1991 - A Blaze In The Northern Sky
Sep 1, 2005 by Anders
A month has passed and we are ready with the second chapter of our trip through the good old times and the classic Scandinavian albums. This time the trip goes to Norway, where we find Darkthrone, one of the true pioneers within the second wave of black metal, and what later was to be known as true norwegian black metal! This I have made the main review myself and are backed up by comments by my fellow writers.

Entombed - 1990 &1991 - Left Hand Path/Clandestine
Aug 1, 2005 by Deek

This is the first installment in our new/first feature series... We'll each month pick a Scandinavian metal album, which we mean is entitled to be called a classic. Either of being influential for today's music scene, or if it has meant a lot for the development of a particular style of metal or just is damn good and up to the standards, years after its release. The first albums, yes there are 2 here, due to them being released shortly after eachother, and while both had/have a major impact on the, in this case, death metal scene. The albums under the hammer are "Left Hand Path" and "Clandestine" by Entombed, the main review is written by Deek this time and commented by the rest.
