God Dethroned
Jul 4, 2005
by Anders
In 1999 I heard the track 'Boiling Blood' on a sampler from a Danish magazine, it moved something in me, with its harsh, brutal and straight forward Slayer attitude. I went out and bought the album "Bloody Blasphemy" with the Dutch band God Dethroned, the album the track was featured on. The album revealed itself to offer a lot more than straight ahead death/thrash, there was a lot of atmosphere and some grande epic songs as well, together with some good melodies. Its been a bit up and down since, "Ravenous" from 2001 was pretty good, but the last effort "Into The Lungs Of Hell" from 2003 was rather boring. God Dethroned is now ready with their new album "Lair Of The White Worm" and that shows a band back on track with a lot of new found energy. I hooked up with drummer Ariën Van Weesenbeek, who gladly answered my questions.
Green Carnation

I was first hooked on Green Carnation when their third album, the light-psychedlic semi-progressive rock album "A Blessing In Disguise" was released. Soon I got hooked on the band's earlier material as well and was delighted when the Norwegians' new album "The Quiet Offspring" was released early this year. Back then it didn't fit into my schedule to interview the band, but flexible as the band's guitarist and main songwriter Tchort always is, he fitted me into to his busy schedule, even though he is in the middle of a 1000 different things right now and kindly answered my questions.
Griffin

The Norwegian heavy metal band Griffin has never been among my favorites until I heard their new album "Lifeforce", a good heavy metal album displaying old deeds in a new and fresh packing delivered with some sheer energy. Lately the band has been through a hassle regarding the vocalist position, as their old screamer Pete Beck left the band, returned and left again (due to illness both times) after the recording of "Lifeforce", though things should be settled now with the new vocalist Rolf Bakken. I got a good talk with guitarist and maiman Kei Nergaard about the new album and his influences.
Ghost Machinery

There are releases which never will get to you, the first or tenth time you listen to it, such a release is the debut album "Haunting Remains" from the Finnish band Ghost Machinery. Though when giving the album enough time it'll slowly open up and display well played symphonic power metal with a nice touch of neo-classical elements and some classic heavy metal deeds, and tons of good guitar playing. I hooked up with mainman/songwriter/lyric writer/guitarist and vocalist Pete Ahonen (a name which you might recognize from Burning Point fame) and got a good talk about Ghost Machinery, why the band got formed, what it is about, the debut album and the future.
Gun Barrel

Gun Barrel a German force on their way ahead in this world. They are delivering very effective heavy metal with a good dose of sheer rock n' roll energy involved, and that is a hard hitting cocktail that works. They released their third album "Bombard Your Soul" earlier this year, and in connection with that I got in connection with singer and lyric-writer Xaver Drexler, who also is new in the band, "Bombard Your Soul" is infact his first album with Gun Barrel, but he is handling his role very well!
Gadget

The Swedish grindcore sensation (as some tends to call them, and I am not sure that I disagree) is now ready with their second album "The Funeral March", yet a furious grindcore album. The new album is more nuanced than the debut "Remote" and offers quite a good deal of bleak and doomy atmospheres, on top of the all out grindcore attack. Gadget isn't a band that follows trends, if some, they create them! I got a good talk with mainman, guitarist, vocalist and drummer William Blackmon.
